Born in Berlin in the 80s, Solon Luigi Colani developed a passion for crafting with diverse materials early on. After studying chemistry and digital media science, and working in IT, he pivoted to design, founding „pyro.labs“ with his father in 2001 and opening a workshop in Berlin. His love for film led him to become a prop maker, special effects technician, and designer for major Hollywood films by directors like Tarantino, Clooney, and the Wachowskis. Solon continues to work across film, theater, television, music videos, and art exhibitions.
“My art reflects a kind of unconventional thinking and desire to work with a multitude of materials and techniques. I don’t feel obliged to adhere to a certain style, and most of my pieces even get published anonymously in public spaces or as contract work under other artists‘ names. For me, art should have, in a way, an impact for people experiencing it and enable them to disrupt, if only for a short moment, their current routine in order to redirect their thoughts. Through my work of building props for the movie industry, I developed a great interest for surface finishes, especially metals. So naturally, I was very delighted when I was asked to to show some objects at the Chrome47 exhibition.”
“If their chairs would melt…”, 200 x 100 x 80 cm, wood, polyurethane resin, glass and chrome paint.
