Don’t miss ‘Under Construction’ by Takeshi Hayatsu & Collaborators, closing Fri 20 Dec, now selected for The Guardian Design Highlights 2024 @guardian by Andrew Nairne, Director of Kettle’s Yard @kettlesyard (thank you @andrewnairne ) who writes:
“This ambitious exhibition brilliantly celebrates a decade of projects led by architect Takeshi Hayatsu @takeshi_hayatsu , working with architecture and landscape students. With a superb sensitivity for materials and craft, Takeshi’s practice feels both ancient and ground-breaking. Having set up his own practice in 2017 (after training in Japan and London and working for Haworth Tompkins and 6a Architects) his projects are both inspiring and generative. Among those he now works with are the innovative 121 Collective @121.collective made up of his ex-students @unit5_kingston@ku_archland . There is a rare modesty about his work, with its focus on the local, the hand-built and a collaborative approach to sustainability. Yet the implications are global. We see the potential for a new generation of architects, like scattered seeds, to be catalysts for change.”
‘Under Construction' by Takeshi Hayatsu & Collaborators closes 20 December 2024. Open Tue-Fri 11am-5pm / FREE Entry

‘Slow Architecture’
Super excited to talk with these masters on Wednesday 11 December 5 pm at @kingston.school.of.art as part of Register lecture series in relation to the Under Construction exhibition @stanleypicker
I will be discussing the role of live build in education and incremental approach to teaching with Shin Egashira from @aaschool Tom Emerson @tomemerson6a from
@studio.tom.emerson and our own professor Andrew Clancy from @ku_archland@clancymoore
Shin was my teacher during my study at the AA and his teaching left a profound influence on my way of seeing things and a certain attitude towards building and making.
Tom was my colleague and leader at 6a architects and his innovative way of teaching at Cambridge and ETH Zurich continues to inspire me still.
The talk will be chaired by Andrew and will be recorded for future podcast. This event is free and no need to book, so please join us if you can. It will be worth a trip as our talk will be followed by the double bill evening lecture delivered by the superb designer/architect Andy Groake from @carmodygroarke !!!

Thank you David Leviatin @londontimberframe for sharing your insight into hands-on making and repair.
The first image by @londontimberframe is about the ongoing assembly and disassembly toolkit for teaching and learning timber framing, with @goldfinger.design who also joined the talk event (thank you for coming!)
I have known David since my time at 6a architects. He has worked with our students at @kingstonbafineart@ku_archland in the year 2012-13 for the spire project, an experimental live build testing the method of erecting a 12 m tall timber spire safely without crane or scaffolding. It was about logistics and health and safety, and what it means to build a landmark together.

Competition entry for Elsenham Community Centre – a collaboration between @takeshi_hayatsu and @maichswift with @structure.workshop@ritchiedaffin@hortus_collective and Richard Collis
This pavilion-like building, situated at the edge of the playing fields, serves as an original interpretation of local architectural heritage while offering a well-crafted space for a wide range of community uses, integrating robust materials, sustainable construction methods, and passive environmental strategies. The all-timber structure employs a reciprocal frame, this beam arrangement allows for large spans with shorter timber lengths and is most efficient when placed in a regular geometric pattern, so is particularly well suited to perfect square or circular buildings.
The building’s exterior features a sweeping, curved roof canopy that gestures towards the surrounding park landscape. Beneath these covered terraces a lime plaster frieze depicts local stories and motifs, drawing inspiration from ornamental pargetting found on historic buildings in the village. Community gardens are arranged around the building, with fruiting trees and areas for gathering. Internally, the main hall is centrally located and top-lit, allowing sunlight to traverse the space throughout the day. Ancillary spaces are arranged around the central hall with large windows inviting natural light and providing views across the playing fields.
