The Interactive tree featured in our Hexmas exhibit is filling up nicely! Visitors of the Salem Art Gallery have an opportunity to make an ornament honoring the winter myths, monsters, and deities of their choice and place it on this tree. Have you visited us recently? Can you spot the ornament you made? Here is a tidbit of history on decorative evergreen trees: The Christmas trees we see shining through our neighbors windows and decorating town squares are accumulations of traditions adopted from the many cultures Catholicism took inspiration from. Trees have been used in rituals and as decorations since ancient times, thus making the historical source of the modern Christmas tree debatable. Plants that remained green year round had significant meaning for people of ancient times in the winter. They’d use them as decor throughout the winter, believing that evergreen would ward off witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. It is believed the Christmas tree tradition as we know it today originated in Germany. It is claimed that in Germany about 723 the English missionary St. Boniface encountered pagans preparing a sacrifice at an oak tree dedicated to the god Thor (Donar). Boniface took an ax to the tree, and, when not struck down by their god, he proclaimed to the amazed pagans that a nearby evergreen was their “holy tree.” Other sources say that a fir grew on the site of the fallen oak. The Satanic Temple Salem and Salem Art Gallery invite you to a glorious celebration of all things Hexmas! This exciting and educational exhibit that explores the reasons for the season and the lore and history that surrounds the deities, characters and traditions that occur during this joyous time of year. This exhibit features an interactive space with a variety of seasonal photo opportunities, a craft station to create your own ornament to wish your favorite deity or character a Happy Holiday, and artworks that will be auctioned as a fundraiser in support of The Satanic Temple and the Religious Reproductive Rights campaign. This display will be on view until January 10th. The Salem Art Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm (closed Mondays).
