Cacerolazo Aunar is a collaborative performance by artists Maria Helena Toscano
@m.h.toscano and Tomás Eyzaguirre
@tomeyza, merging their practices to create a sound-based experience of energy mediation. The title “Cacerolazo” refers to a form of popular protest in various Latin American countries, where people bang pots, pans, and other metallic objects to make noise and demand attention.
In this performance, the echo of the metallic sounds are processed and transformed by Tomás’ custom-made instrument (AUNAR). The performance unfolds in two layers: the ritualistic and the sonic. These dimensions intertwine, embodying a protest against displacement and extrativism, enacted through the appearance of a ghostly figure and mantras in an atmosphere where the corporeality of the voice surrounds the audience. The forces of resistance and struggle are physically traced in the pots, through the hammering of metal, with vibrations resonating from the pots to the floor, before being spun, released, and sonically altered.
What begins as a deconstructed protest of noise gradually evolves into rhythmic percussion, incorporating both Cumbia and Andean sounds, transforming the energy from one of tension to one of purification. The performance moves seamlessly from ecclesiastical chants to traditional Latin American folkloric music, invoking the strength of Kerepakupai Vená (Angel Falls). The natural ambiance and sounds of the region permeate the space, creating a rhythmic syncretism that unites spirit and nature in an immersive sonic ritual.
