It’s not only orcas in Norway - Humpback whales are very present in the waters of the fjords. At this time of year most of the humpbacks will migrate south to tropical waters for the breeding season. However not all humpbacks migrate down. Some individuals that have no interest in reproducing, will stay in the north and keep on enjoying the herring feast! Orcas X Humpback Whales = lunch together? In the fjords of Norway, an awe-inspiring spectacle unfolded before our eyes: The giants of the Arctic Ocean: orcas and humpback whales, converged in an all day herring feast right at the bay of our tiny village Seglvik. The whales were gliding and swirling elegantly and effortlessly around the gigantic shimmering herring bait ball that dwarfed even the whales’ massive sizes. They were minding their own business. They came so close to the spectators that left us screaming and breathless with excitement, but they were also smart enough to avoid touching any of the little fragile floating humans. I was mesmerised by their presence and beauty, their grace. Their movements were so smooth and calm, almost as if they were not hunting. I watched them circle around and pass right in front or underneath me, sometimes forgetting to breathe. When they pick a semi-fainting herring and chew on it, it was CUTENESS overload!! Hundreds of seagulls and seabirds were hovering above me, excited to pick up the leftover food from the whales. The Arctic sunset cast honey coloured light on the west corner of the sky. Golden rays glazed a layer of warmth over the darkening sea and the tranquil snow-covered mountains. We were all so absorbed in this magical and spectacular event. No one knew how long we’d be granted for this show. It ended up playing for the whole day! What a privilege to be able to observe this right at the front row.
