Lotte Kopecky wins prestigious Vélo D’Or and Trophée Eddy Merckx ‘I really wanted to add this award to my list of honours’ Lotte Kopecky wins the prestigious Vélo d’Or and also the Trophée Eddy Merckx from organisers L’Équipe & Vélo Magazine. With this prize, the world champion has received a fine crown for her 2024 Grand Cru season. The two-time world champion Kopecky unfortunately could not pick up the award in Paris as she is currently in Lapland staying at Team SD Worx-Protime’s team-building camp. ‘I am honoured to add the Vélo d’Or to my palmares. This is one of those awards that you want to win at least once in your career,’ Kopecky let on. Kopecky experienced a dream season in 2024. Among others, she won Paris-Roubaix, four WorldTour stage races, won an Olympic bronze medal and crowned the season with a second consecutive world title in Zurich. ‘This was a dream season. After 2023, I thought it would be hard to do better, but I managed somehow. For me to win the Vélo d’Or is an honour. I secretly hoped for it last year, but of course I was also happy with the Trophée Eddy Merckx. To actually win the Vélo d’Or now is fantastic. It shows it was a great season after all.’ ‘Apart from the beautiful victories, I’m happy with the fact that I made nice strides in climbing last season. My victory at Jebel Hafeet and second place at Blockhaus give a lot of motivation for the future. Paris-Roubaix and my second consecutive world title are my absolute highlights of last season. Winning the individual WorldTour-ranking was also something I wanted to tick off. I realise that once again it will not be easy to do better, but as a top athlete your goal is always to improve yourself.’ ‘I am proud and fulfilled after this season. It’s nice when hard work is rewarded and gives a lot of motivation. Winning big races never gets used to. It’s an indescribable feeling. I haven’t set my goals for next year yet.
