I’ve told our wonderful cast to perform this first song in a harsh and judgemental tone. As you probably already know, we theater folks love drama because it fills our performances with passion and intensity! Performing the song with an extremely harsh and ridiculing tone toward the wicked witch will clearly illustrate the attitude people in society possess when encountering someone who isn’t “normal.” #aintnoloveforthewicked #dramaallthetime

I’m so excited for my audience to hear this first song of Wicked! Obviously my “audience” is anyone who listens to this song, but the people I most want to deliver my message to are those who are guilty of excluding others in order to conform to society’s view of what is normal. I believe that most of us belong in this group, for it is human nature to be afraid of things that aren’t normal, but I hope after listening to this song, audiences will have a change in mindset of how they view and treat others. #comingJune102003

The purpose of my opening piece is to set the theme of the musical and the way the characters rejoice in the defeat of evil. This song will bring attention to the fact that society often ostracizes those who display differences and cause the audience to reflect on their own personal views towards social outcasts. #checkurselfb4urekurself

So I’ve been bouncing around this idea in my head about personifying the concept of “goodness” in the song. Isn’t it crazy how “goodness” seems to take on its own personality in our current society? Humans who label themselves as “good” are quick to denounce what they label as “wicked” as they follow what is considered morally right. I think including the line “And Goodness knows/ The Wicked’s lives are lonely/ Goodness knows the Wicked die alone” will be sufficient in relaying the strong societal distance created between those are good and wicked; evil equates to a life of despair and loneliness while goodness equates to a life of prosperity and support. #goodness? #i #dont #know #her

When we neglect those who are different, we tend to never consider how this affects them. Being rejected by society makes one feel extremely lonely, and to portray this in the song, I think it would be appropriate to use an anaphora in the chorus. The lyrics will be “No one mourns the Wicked/ No one cries ‘They won’t return’/ No one lays a lily on their grave.” Through the repetition of the words “No one,” I believe this anaphora will be effective in illustrating how rejecting someone leaves them completely and utterly alone. And because they are so alone and are never supported by anyone, they become unfamiliar with what love and kindness is like, and thus are only able to treat others the way they have been treated. If a person is only ever shown hate and resentment, how could they be expected to treat others any other way? I hope that emphasizing how rejection forces one into solitude will lead my audience to reflect on their own treatment of others in the past, and realize that showing kindness to others, despite what differences they may have, will in turn lead others to act the same way.

“Good news! She’s dead!” is not something you hear everyday, but I think this paradoxical statement will perfectly describe how the Ozians viewed Elphaba before her death. They do not care that they did not know whether she was born evil or became evil and they do not care to learn the cause of her wicked behavior. Elphaba’s death will be met with grand celebrations and rejoicing instead of sorrowful mournings to reflect how the Ozians fail to recognize and acknowledge any good within her that may have been trumped by wickedness.

In the first song of this musical, I am going to introduce the iconic character, Elphaba, who represents the “outcast” that is neglected by society. Elphaba is shunned by others because of her green skin from the moment she is born as her father exclaims: “The baby is unnaturally green!” This symbolizes a common stereotype; people who display differences are dangerous/evil. #dontjudgeabookbyitscover #greenlife

Hey musical theatre fanatics! I am working on creating a musical adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, and I have decided to share my process of creating the introductory song, “No One Mourns the Wicked” with all of you! The musical will take an alternative view on the original tale of “The Wizard of Oz” as it extends the story’s timeline to explore the important and unexpected factors that impact the actions of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West. In this first song, the main message revolves around how the way one is treated by those around them has a direct influence on their actions; whether a person is good or evil may be a direct result of their environment. To make my intentions clear I will include the rhetorical question, “Are people born Wicked? Or do they have Wickedness thrust upon them?” sang by Glinda as she reflects on what had truly caused Elphaba’s wickedness. I am super excited about this project and I can’t wait to share more with you all! #wickedwho? #teambornevil #teamwickedbcmymomdrankagreenelixir #moretothestory
