TOP 3 PERCYS: WOBBLY 4x4
Wobbly 4x4 is a Nottingham-based music archivist and one of the UKβs OG Bassline historians
Having started out by archiving Bassline tracks on Soundcloud, the Wobbly 4x4 Instagram account has now widened itβs scope to include content on both legendary artists and up and comers across a multitude of genres
For his Top 3 Percys, he wanted to give an insight into the variety of his musical taste, as well as sharing the track that kickstarted it all for him:
Burgaboy - I Can Love You
βAn absolute Burgaboy classic which holds a special place in my heart, it was one of the first bassline tunes I remember hearing after it was accidentally bluetoothed to my Sony Ericsson on the school bus.β
Plasticman - Cha VIP
βProbably my favourite grime instrumental of all time! Guaranteed to go off in any set, those dark punchy snares never fail to amaze.β
Pariah - Orpheus
βA friend introduced me to this one quite a few years back and it has been a regular to my listening ever since. The vocal sampling of Thelma Houstonβs Grammy winning 70βs hit βDonβt leave me this wayβ fusions perfectly with the mellow garage beat. Proper beautiful track.β

CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER π
Much like Grime, the Bassline scene carved out its own βwar dubβ culture in the late 2000s. Beginning around 2008, these Bassline diss tracks took on a unique flavor. Producers would recreate their rivalsβ signature sounds or techniques to prove they could master the style themselves, often adding a twisted version of the opponentβs producer tag, followed by an over-the-top sample that made no secret of the diss. These βbattlesβ had attitude but were never intended as hostile confrontations.
Despite the raw energy and intense competition of these tracks, the Bassline disses were all in good fun. Most of the producers involved were close friends, and these tracks, far from signaling beef, were made to hype up raves and ignite the dancefloor.
A legendary example of this playful rivalry was between Mr. Virgo and TRC. Rumor has it that Mr. Virgoβs track Hypnotiq was aimed at TRC, leading TRC to release Hey Thatβs My Sound, with vocals by Z.O. (Zeo Zeonardo), as a bold response. Both tracks went on to secure spots in Bassline history, featured in the iconic Sound of Bassline 2 compilation, forever cementing their place in the genreβs hall of fame.
TRCβs rivalry with Mr. Virgo was just one of his notable clashes. He also went toe-to-toe with Burgaboy in a series of diss tracks that pushed the genreβs boundaries. Each producer brilliantly mirrored the otherβs style, creating tracks that highlighted just how closely matched they were in skill and creativity.
Looking back, these 2008-2009 Bassline battles capture an era that has yet to be replicated. They showcased the fierce talent and drive of these young producers, while also embodying the mutual respect and camaraderie within the scene. It was a time when friendly competition forged new sounds, proving that rivalry among friends can fuel creativity and lead to lasting musical legacies.
