BAD WITCH / NINE INCH NAILS _ The Null Corporation / Capitol Records 2018 Album _ The sleeve for Nine Inch Nails’ ninth album was created by Hassan Rahim’s studio 12:01, with designers Travis Brothers and J.S. Aurelius. I got to quiz Hassan about the process. “Trent provided two key words: primitive spirituality” says Rahim. The NIN frontman Reznor went on to say that Bad Witch represented “not literally witchcraft but the unexplainable, magic, nature, belief… not in the scientific kind of way but the unknowable, what’s beyond the threshold of death”. After researching hundreds of public domain photos around the themes, the final creative solution was to make the cover “a sequential puzzle of images. More cryptic than explanatory. Alluding to unidentified aerial phenomena, fear, superstition, collapse of civilisation, and ultimately rebirth”. This imagery was put through a repetitive degenerative “feedback loop” of photographing, copying and scanning, to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The team also created an extended visual language for promotion and touring, including atmospheric photography of Reznor and Atticus Ross shot by Brandon Bowen. Of its decayed, grainy style, Rahim says “There’s an art world term for preserving works on paper called ‘acid free’ and I wanted the exact opposite of that. I wanted free acid”. The end result is haunting, enigmatic and slightly unsettling - like the music.
