This collection was conceived using a design fiction approach, inspired by the usage scenarios of survivors of post-apocalyptic fiction or by testimonies of modern survivors. I’m looking for new ways to dress ourselves, anticipating the need to make do with what we’ve got.
What if our civilization couldn’t withstand climate change, and fell into ruin? Our humanity is dispossessed and homeless. The last of mankind finds itself living like the first men in a brand-new socio-ecological context. An anthropic setting of urban ruin amid renaturalization. Speculative anthropology and post-apocalyptic figuration. What might the Last of Us look like? What mythology of the last man? What will we mutate into? Urban hermits, asphalt nomads, autarkic communities, or Rimbaldian vagabonds survive on the ruins of the modern world. Melancholy wandering among the vestiges of an almost vanished level of civilization. The world of yesteryear was engulfed under vegetation in full effusion. Left to their own devices beneath the rubble, they are the memory from beyond the grave. Going from a life in captivity to a life in stealth. Decayed finery made from patched assemblages. An outfit in perpetual transformation according to climate and environment, made up of habitual adjustments and readjustments. One of the first necessities for these survivors is to cover their bodies with what’s left to protect themselves, as in the early days of humanity. We could call this new primitive mode of clothing made of little things - the stylism of survival, a veritable moda povera.»
