Quick vfx breakdown of a shot I did with @pretendvfx for Childish Gambino’s Bando Stone and the New World. We loved working with Donald Glover as a director on this. Focused, attentive, clear with what he wanted. 10/10. I saw today that Donald is canceling the rest of his Bando Stone tour for health reasons. Such a shame as he’s one of the hardest working and gifted people we’ve had the luck of working with, brief as it may have been. Wishing him a fast recovery. Also- love how they just shot this on a busy beach in the middle of the day. Goats.

Thrilled I got to contribute.

One of my goals as a director is to make producing feel like less of a thankless job. Arcadian predates me by several years. Originally title Sand and Stones, @davidwulf had been putting the project together since the pandemic. When David and @braxtonpope asked me to come on as director, I didn’t anticipate just how much the movie would become “mine”. In quotation marks. Imagine crashing on a friend’s couch for an entire year. Imagine how hard it would be to not start acting like you own the place. It would take conscious effort. You would be fighting against a natural state of being inconsiderate. David and Braxton backed me 100 percent. They gave me artistic freedom within a multi-million dollar investment that they were liable for as fiduciary. If filmmaking were just a matter of overseeing the paint by numbers, an insurance company could do it. But it’s a medium that only truly succeeds if there is a generous but considered infusion of creative risk taking. This is where David and Braxton represent the ideal partnership, and a compass that directors like myself can rely on through a process that can become rendered dysfunctional by fear. Last but not least we have @jakevanwagoner who completed the holy trinity. Serving as the boots on the ground line producer extraordinaire, there is literally nothing about the physical production of this movie that would’ve happened without Jake. And it’s only natural that when you see someone excelling at their job to that degree you go “oh, this must be your thing!” But Jake’s talent is not to be confused with the product of his grit and determination, because he’s also a writer, tv show runner, and feature film director who had his debut premier at Sundance the year we shot Arcadian. I hope anyone who is an up-and-coming filmmaker who has read this far down in the post notes the following: don’t categorize people. Jake isn’t a writer/director who line produces. I’m not a vfx artist who got asked to direct a movie. We are all filmmakers. Filmmakers who are willing to do anything it takes to make a quality piece of work. Arcadian comes out in theaters Friday, April 12th.

So proud of the people who made Arcadian w/ me. And I have so many HARD photos of these folks. Will post more in the next weeks but I gotta kick it off with the Keep Walking Boys Check out @jakevanwagoner director/producer extraordinaire running the boom mic on a pickup day. @zstoltz director/vfx artist par excellence getting his arms cast for a practical effect. And then the man himself @frankmobilio shooting the best looking footage I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking complete credit for. There’s nothing these three can’t do and there’s nothing they wouldn’t do to ‘get it done.’ I’m glad I have a few snapshots that show the smallest fraction of what they did to make Arcadian a better film than I could have ever imagined. I can’t wait to borrow money from them later in life, Frank especially.
