Snippet of my work for DANCE MACHINE at @householdpresents and a video of the dance performance by @chrisdyke.007

DANCE MACHINE curated by @tom.golin presents a series of works responding to the sweeping dance moves of @chrisdyke.007. In collaboration with video artist @capitalwastepictures , Dyke’s dance moves have been recorded using motion capture technology. From these recordings, the dance has been abstracted into various images of ribboning lines, each depicting four seconds of Dyke’s movement. Fifteen local artists, designers and furniture makers received a specific timestamp of the dance and responded to it in their chosen medium.

This exhibition creates a map of the body in motion, a reinterpretation of distilled movements into objects, paintings, and drawings. Each response is an act of translation, of trying to make sense of a moment, channeling the frenetic energy of Dyke’s movement into acts of pinching, painting, carving, bending and throwing. Each artwork is not an attempt to retrace the steps of the dance, rather an opportunity to re-interpret it, to extend it into new forms, and get into the groove of Christopher Dyke’s rhythms.

The grid on the page is a dance floor, hovering behind the artworks, laying low within the original images given to each artist like a stage, providing a sense of place for Dyke’s movements. Like the grid, all of these experiments in movement share an underlying desire to fix a moment, to transform the instantaneous into something more permanent. And yet, what we capture is always an interpretation. To reproduce a movement alters the meaning of that moment. In capturing four seconds of Dyke’s dancing, we don’t preserve it—we move alongside it in a new way, one that is filtered through the gestures of another.

In Household Gallery, each slice of Christopher Dyke’s dance has now found its way back together. A single minute has been extended into hours of labour and reflection, distilled into a range of artworks that move with and against each other; there is no repetition like a chorus line, instead it’s a house party.

Stills from DANCE MACHINE group exhibition up now at @householdpresents. Curated by @tom.golin and @liliharrison.
It all started when @tom.golin asked if we could turn the movements of dancer @chrisdyke.007 into metal shapes. We captured his moves at my studio with an @orbbec Femto Mega into @touchdesigner and then chopped up the 3D data into 4 second chunks to create virtual 3D flight paths of each limb. These shapes were distributed to the other artists in the group show as a starting off point for their iwn works.

“Impulse Response” was a 4-hour immersive installation where ceramics, sound, and video converged in a live, elemental dialogue. Master ceramicist Neville Assad-Salha (@nevillesalha) commanded the wheel, shaping large clay forms that grounded the performance, while sound artists Mx Robert Frost (@mxrobertfrost) and Panos Couros (Atunement) and video artist CAPITAL WASTE (@capitalwastepictures) amplified the experience. Contact and condenser microphones captured resonances from clay and airborne sounds, crafting an improvised soundscape that responded to the live clay-making process. Video projections intensified these impulses, merging sound, vision, and material into a powerful sensory experience. Audiences roamed freely, enjoyed the bar, and supported Beirut crisis relief through donations. The event was also live-streamed at 7:30 pm Adelaide time (ACDT) on Thursday, 5th December, 2024 from @theqonhallett

//:INITIALISE_BEACON (live)
@capitalwastepictures X @quartz.pistol X @shreddingford666

An improvised, ambient audio visual exploration into deep space in search of a mysterious distress beacon light years away.

://INITIALIZE_BEACON is the live exploration of a faint emergency beacon signal from a distant galaxy. Following the blips on their monitor, the signal gets louder and eventually they are able to triangulate its galactic location from the fragmented and garbled audio recordings. They travel through wormholes, blackholes, fluid galaxies, bending time, space and reality as they follow the rhythmic sonar blips calling out to them like a siren. As they approach, the signal becomes clearer and the glitched sounds are revealed to be audio recordings from someone, but who…..?

Visually compiled using @touchdesigner video artist @capitalwastepictures uses security cameras, analog video mixers and feedback glitch loops as elements in the LED scene. The ship is controlled by a joystick and moves through the star systems. MIDI signals from @shreddingford666 VST virtual synths trigger synced visuals and cockpit notifications both sonically and on screen. Live vocals with vocal processing from @quartz.pistol add an ethereal mystery to the sequenced soundtrack and ship ambience.

Honoured to share the bill with @team.rolfes X @ninajirachi performing 321 RULE and @kevinpeterhe X @messianicgloss performing PASSAGE.

Massive thanks to @infernalfaun , @r_a_t_b_o_y @chickencrimpyparty

Live at @thelab_adl 30.11.2024

Impulse Response is a 3-hour immersive installation where ceramics, sound, and video blend in a live, improvisational performance. Master ceramicist Neville Assad-Salha sculpts large clay urns, infusing the space with earth and water. Each urn, after trimming, becomes a sound vessel with embedded speakers that carry the resonances of electronic compositions by sound artists Mx Robert Frost and Panos Couros (Atunement). The process is elemental—dirt and water combine, are wedged, thrown, and transformed through fire and skill. Guests can roam or settle on cushions near the bar, immersing themselves in the evolving artwork. A live video feed by CAPITAL WASTE (Liam Somerville) captures the performance through analog and security cameras, creating a lo-fi, glitchy visual experience projected in real-time.

Doors open 7:30 after the artists have begun,
encouraging a natural flow as audiences move through the space.

FREE ENTRY with donations warmly accepted toward the Beirut crisis.

We are so excited to announce::: Plastiq will be performing at RADICAL REVELRY - the official™️ After Party for the opening of RADICAL TEXTILES an exhibition at @agsa.adelaide showcasing innovations and traditions in textile works from the past century.

Textiles are an important part of the Plastiq universe. Our very own @quartz.pistol designs and hand makes all of our costumes and merchendise™️ - she is working on something special for this show. Come see where fashion and surrealist-pop collides™️

Humans have used textiles to express identity, culture, resistance and defiance for centuries. We have told stories, kept our babies warm and made practical tools with textiles. In a time of fast fashion and consumerism, the art and communal creative act of making unique things is dying. May we celebrate and strengthen resistance through textiles and hand made objects to break the consumer cycles that feed capitalism and colonialism™️

With love Plastiq 😘
