Yesterday, while I was playing (DJing), someone—a fellow Black brother—came up to me and asked, “How does a Black African dare to play techno?” That question was one of the most ignorant, disrespectful, and frankly, ridiculous things I’ve been asked in a long time.
That question wasn’t just disrespectful; it reflected a deep misunderstanding about the roots of music and the powerful, cross-cultural rhythms that connect us.

Traveling across the African continent, I’ve come to understand music on a level that goes far beyond genres. Who decided that techno or EDM is only for “white people” just because it’s now commercialized in the West?

I experienced the rawest form of a rave in Bocanda, a village in the heart of Côte d’Ivoire, where people of all ages gathered to celebrate, vibe, and dance to zouglou—a native genre with high BPMs and deep, groovy tribal rhythms that felt powerfully familiar, resonating with the same energy that some might call “techno.”

For those who question me, know this: I’m not just playing techno. I’m connecting with sounds that resonate within me and reflect my heritage, merging them into something new. Unlike some who accept the brainwashing and limitations set by their environment, I’m drawing from my own culture and experiences to create a sound that’s both fresh and deeply rooted. (Afrocentric)

So, let’s be clear—don’t come to me with disrespect. The time and energy I pour into researching, creating, and sharing my music come from a place of pride and profound connection. If it’s not your vibe, you’re free to move on. But I’ll keep doing what moves me.

Respectfully,
RAVER FOLI

Have you seen a 🧜🏿‍♀️ before? No? Lemme present you one I have met not too long ago

"MAMISI - Aneho, Togo - Sep. 24 ©FoliCreppy" featured in @photovogue

In the soft embrace of golden light, the Mamisi stands—rooted, radiant, and timeless. A Mamisi is a person who inherits the water spirit, Mami Wata—a force of healing, abundance, and fertility similar to Venus or Aphrodite. Known for their beauty—one that defies simple words, as if shaped by the water spirits themselves.
Her presence hums with the whispers of ancestral waters, her gaze reflecting a lineage steeped in divinity. She is draped in flowing white, the color of purity and spiritual transcendence, a bridge between the seen and unseen. Delicate white markings grace her forehead—sacred symbols etched in reverence to the spirits she carries. Strands of beads adorn her neck and arms, each one a silent rhythm binding her to her calling and her people.
Her smile, gentle yet knowing, invites those who seek her: the healers, the dreamers, the wanderers drawn to the water’s edge. Through her, Mami Wata flows—eternal, powerful, and alive—guiding, watching, and whispering to all who dare to listen.

„Crimson Bond - Heirs of HOMOWO“ Jamestown, Accra, August 2024

This image shows two children standing side by side in matching vibrant red traditional outfits, set against the weathered blue-and-white wall of the Hansen Compound—a historic site in Jamestown, Accra, once a slave house. Captured during the Homowo Festival, the New Year celebration of the Ga people, the photograph embodies the festival’s spirit of renewal and resilience.
One child’s serious expression contrasts with the other’s shy, introspective demeanor, highlighting the individuality that thrives within shared cultural bonds. Their vibrant red attire—symbolic of life, energy, and celebration—echoes the essence of Homowo, a festival that honors strength and abundance in the face of hardship.
Through the interplay of light and shadow, the children stand as living testaments to the cultural pride of their ancestors, rooted in tradition but gazing toward a future full of promise. This image captures not only a moment in time but the enduring legacy of resilience and unity, alive in every generation.
