DAMNED AND DOOMED

Thanks to the audience that listened carefully to what we had to tell, thanks to the people that let us into their realms, thanks to the many helping hands that worked with us on this piece.

We are continuing our journey in the upcoming year, so stay with us and keep on swearing!

Thank you💚

Ahoi, ahoi Des Admirals
01 June – 16 July, 2024

With Dina Danish, Gregory Tara Hari, Shana Lutker, Sophie Jung, Guillaume Pilet, Latefa Wiersch, Martina-Sofie Wildberger

DAMNED AND DOOMED, a one-person performance by Gregory Tara Hari explores the imagined power of cursing as a means of coping with grief, anger, and societal disillusionment in the context of misrepresentation of East- and South East Asian women in Western society and media, and the behavior of predominantly western and white tourists in Southeast Asia and their interactions with local culture and customs in regards to respect and representation. Wearing a green costume, inspired by the vengeful spirit of the banana tree ‘Nang Tani’, and silver finger nails extensions, which are traditionally used in dance and theater throughout Southeast Asia, Hari recites existing texts from films, songs, and political statements, and combines them with invented texts. Drawing upon experiences he highlights examples of misrepresentation in Swiss films, such as ‘Leo Sunnyboy’ and ‘Gekauftes Glück’, along with the social context of migration stories. The prevalence of raw violence in Thai news coverage and Thai soap operas, such as ‘Ruan That’, and the use of swearing as a raw and honest expression of emotion, challenges societal norms and offers a glimpse into the complexities of cultural identity and injustice.

🟢 PORTRAIT D'ARTISTE
Gregory Tara Hari (CH/TH)

OK...

After six months in South Africa, it was time for me to head home - whatever that means.

The nature, culture and the people - there was just enough time to get a glimpse of it all. I didn‘t feel entirely at home down there, but I terribly miss it since my departure. In the passing year, I‘ve exhibited and performed in Cape Town, Bregenz, Zürich, Basel, Berlin, and now in Winterthur. It’s great to be travelling again and meeting fellow artists, curators, visitors - people.

Back then in Cape Town, I lived at Greenmarket Square, opposite the Old Town House, built in 1761. At that time the square became the venue for the sale of fresh goods, followed by the sale of people. Just next door is the infamous Capetonian Langstrasse, called Longstreet. Like it‘s Zurichoise sister, it’s a street of partying, getting absolutely wasted on kinds of drugs and of course Sex Work. Without romanticising, it felt somewhat unvarnished there.

The topic I’ve been working on for this year’s ANYM is connected with the idea of installing oneself, and adapting to a current situation. Godess knows we‘ve all had to learn that skill in recent times.

Rituals such as, taking one‘s shoes off when entering the flat, putting on the TV right afterwards (if you grew up partly Asian), inviting friends for a home made pizza (I‘m sorry to say but I prefer Da Michelangelo) and maybe burning some more of that Palo Santo (yeah another piece of Holy Peruvian Forest) - these are the things, a home can be made of.

Before I say my final words, and you can finally grab that glass of Prosecco you‘ve been longing for since lunch time, I want to thank my people for the support and love they have given me, especially through this year.

The greatest gratitude goes to my family, who have taught me the simplest, but by far most important thing - the meaning of home:

To the ones who have one, to the ones who are looking for it and to the ones who lost it - I wish you all the very best of luck to build, preserve and share your home...

TO HOME
