Inge Grognard: A Radical Beauty Legacy.
Inge Grognard is a Belgian make-up artist who helped cultivate the aesthetic universe of the Antwerp Six. Grognard grew up alongside Martin Margiela, and their friendship and careers remain closely intertwined. Inge was as much into clothes as Martin was, but knew that fashion design didn’t suit her talents. Instead, enthralled by the world of clothing and style, she found herself pursuing make-up.
Grognard enrolled in an Antwerp-based make-up school, all the while experimenting on herself. “I was my first model, in a way, I tested everything out on myself.” Back then, the job of a make up artist didn’t even exist– it was the model who was expected to do her own hair and make up. It wasn’t until 1989 that her career started to take shape, thanks to her organic relationship with Margiela. This led to her early collaborations with the Antwerp Six, as well as working with her husband and creative partner, Ronald Stoops. Both Grognard and Stoops wanted to go against the redundant glitz and glam of the time.
“I love horror movies. I love blood. I love black. I love skin. I love real emotions.” said Grognard when asked about the things that inspire her work. Everything starts in her head when it comes to her creative process: words; smells; moods. Inge knows herself and her work clearly. “You don’t realize it when you start, but at a certain moment, you begin to see a line in your work. And that makes me happy. Why should I change that? It’s what makes it me.”
Grognard’s recent collaborations with Balenciaga have pushed her to the forefront of the industry: Demna’s futuristic, alternative visions of beauty mesh perfectly with that of Grognard’s. “I like to work with designers who are interesting. It’s the same with photographers, I’m really open to working with new people but I need to like them because otherwise, it doesn’t work.”
Grognard’s work is currently on display at @momuantwerp as part of their exhibition ‘Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor.’
