Sound is what makes watching movies a physical experience as the waves reverberate through your body and opens your mind. It’s what makes what you see on a flat screen immersive. I grew up with Baard @baardhi and Tormod @tringnes . They have sound designed every movie I ever made. From short films we shot behind the local gas station to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, via KON-TIKI and now the new TRON - they have poured their hearts and souls into every desibel along the way. But their best work, and what has meant the most to me, is what they delivered on YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA - and how they made Trudy’s journey so subjective through clever sound design. As you can see and hear in the before-and-after clip above; for Trudy’s big swim (last half of the film), Baard and Tormod, together with Luke Gentry, Ben Meechan and Mike Prestwood Smith and their amazing teams (including editor @unanidhonghaile), literally created 100% of what you’re hearing. Almost the same as when you sound design an animated movie. Everything is created from scratch. The clip is a good example of how, through designing the revs of a steam engine, sound is pivotal in illustrating Trudy’s struggle and fatigue. I love this VFX breakdown reel for YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA. Even though we tried to get as much as possible in camera (including weeks of shooting on the open ocean) - there are in fact over 650 VFX shots in the movie. Made by incredible artists at MPC @mpc_film , EDI @effettidigitaliitaliani and CGEV @cgevvfx , this craftsmanship was of tremendous importance when completing Trudy’s story (I’m looking at you, jellyfish🪼). Thank you to supervisor Richard Briscoe @defocus , his team and the hundreds of artists who contributed in making some of the best VFX shots I’ve ever seen. When people ask me for advice on how to get started in the movie industry I tell them two things: Make movies in any way you can (this includes writing them). And, make sure you seize on any opportunity that comes your way. This (cringy) little short was something Espen and I put together during lunch breaks while on a commercial shoot in 2004 (and yes that is @pronouncedhorhay :). It was made in an attempt to convince @salmahayek and penelopecruzoficial that we were the right directors for their film, Bandidas (the skit is a spoof on a passage in the script where the girls go through boot camp to become bank robbers). Luckily they liked our dedication - and we got to do our first feature film🤠🤠

Cleaning out my computer I stumbled upon a folder called “KON-TIKI polaroids” (not sure they’re actual polaroids). Taken by various crew, the images are from our sets in Malta, Bulgaria, Thailand and the Maldives in 2011. Looking at these now, I instantly feel the rolling waves and the smell of rotten bamboo and balsa. What an amazing adventure to be a part of 🌅 PS: If you want to watch the film, try getting hold of the Norwegian version! #kontiki

Filming TRON: ARES in Mexico City this week has made me realize that I was here exactly twenty years ago - directing my first movie 🤯 I’m thinking about all the amazing people that we worked with back then, the memories - and how much I didn’t know but was going to learn 🥏🤠#tronares #bandidas #kissmeimmexican
