Despite the humorous narrative the film has a refined and sophisticated palette that really shows off clean skin tones in these stark hospital environments. Arnold hosted a series of pregnancy classes in his home to give back to the community but also gain some insight into the role. He continued with them after filming for a number of months after such a positive response from the community. Man on Fire (2004) was captured on a variety of glorious 35mm and 16mm Kodak stocks. The film was directed by the God among men, Tony Scott and lensed by Paul Cameron, who previously collaborated on the BMW short film Beat the Devil (2002). They would later collaborate on the underrated classic Déjà Vu (2006). Denzel Washington’s character is based on a real CIA operative of the same name who went on to become a mercenary. Christopher Walken ruined so many takes do to a chewing gum habit at the time that the producers had to get PAs to sneak into his trailer to steal his stash.

Shoot to Kill (1988) aka Deadly Pursuit was shot on glorious Kodak 35mm film. The film was directed by Roger Spottiswoode, writer of 48 hrs. The location where Tom Berenger is seen crossing the canyon you may recognize from the often overlooked classic First Blood. Aside from the extensive bushcraft and mountaineering training Tom underwent he also began his Jiu-Jitsu training here in preparation for a fight with Sidney Poitier. The Golden Goose though is this film filmed almost concurrently with The Bear (see previous post) and Sidney Poitier was able to visit their set in Italy during preproduction to develop a relationship with the animal that would eventually come to BC to film their big scene together.

The Bear (1988) was shot on glorious Kodak 35mm in Panavision anamorphic format. Jim Henson’s creature shop made animatronic Bears as stand ins for the real animals. They filmed for 19 brutal weeks in the Italian alps. Opening weekend audiences bought 3.6 million dollars worth of tickets but when they filmed they had another audience: the bodies of young men long dead from Austria’s failed attempt to invade Italy through the mountains in the spring of 1916, their frail forms still frozen beneath the ice.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) was shot on glorious Kodak EXR 50D 5245 and EXR 500T 5296 stocks. The first visual effects team was fired for saying modern computer technology was needed to achieve some of the shots and Francis replaced them with his son Roman Coppola. Michael Keaton was considered to play Dracula but the character of Batman was too similar. Later, Gary Oldman would go on to play Commissioner Gordon in future Batman films.

Stalker was shot on glorious Kodak 5247 film, however one batch was defective and possibly processed incorrectly which led to some very green footage. The cameraman responsible for the shot was fired but it was not his fault. The film was all shot in color but some scenes were printed black and white. Tarkovsky himself and other crew members died of cancer most likely from shooting in the films poisonous locations.
