Do you still remember that feeling of the first time you ever surfed? — It was new, it was potent, and it was something that likely changed your life that day. That all being said, we’d like to introduce you to the San Diego-based non-profit @un.mar.de.colores . “It’s always been about more than just teaching them to ride waves; it’s about the confidence they build, the healing they find in like-minded communities, and ultimately the discovery of their role as stewards of the ocean,” executive director @marrioo tells us. I’ve been returning to the Yucatán every year since I was a baby. It’s been my family’s home since time immemorial and in fact my my abuelo buried my umbilical cord in the mountains here. So, quite literally, a part of me has nurtured this ecosystem, and in return, the magic of this region has protected me.

Each visit reveals something new about the land, our roots, and myself. There’s a quiet power in the low-lying jungles, the echoes of town dances in the pueblo’s centro, the hidden cenotes, and the warmth of my family.

My time here is mainly spent reflecting and dreaming about new ways to connect people to live in reciprocal relationships with land and the ocean. It’s my source of inspiration for being.

The most recent visit was special. It was the largest group of friends I’ve ever invited to join me. It was heart warming to share this magic with those who respect and truly see it as well. @gabbymarchese @ryder.england @alana.mooi

Highlights include:

	1.	Xareli’s first visit to a cenote.
	2.	Meeting a retired priest turned traditional beekeeper.
	3.	Sleeping in hammocks at abuela’s.

As always, leaving feels tough. I know I’ll return soon, drawn back by my roots that run as deep as the cenotes. Until then, I’ll try to carry a piece of the Yucatán’s quiet magic with me. I hope you can feel it next time you see me. ✨

Earlier in the year I was invited to a group trip to Slovenia with @intrepidtravel and @cotopaxi They call this place little Europe because it fits all the beauty of Europe all in one country. From mountains, lakes, coastline (although small), to historical cities and forests. It’s got it all.

To be honest, typically group trips ain’t my thang 😅but my mind has been changed since this trip. My time there was spent with a solid group of humans all who brought their unique perspectives into how to appreciate a new place. Thanks @wholehanna @rick_ontherun @geobeckly for helping me@see that!
And to our Intrepid travel guide Vorda for welcoming us.

For those who’ve now added Slovenia 🇸🇮 to their next travel itinerary, here are a little freshly chopped take of my top favorite spots. ⚡️🧊

My relationship with running in a nutshell:
Photo 1: After being super timid with my running for a year because of a torn hip labrum diagnosis, I went from 0 to 30 miles all in one day to celebrate my 30th birthday.
Photo 2. Current training mileage.
Photo 3. Running, even on vacay.

From the maize and moles of the Sierras to the Coconuts and Ceviche of the playa. From its Zapotec and Mixteco people to its green natural spaces and warm water coastline, Oaxaca is truly a land of magic. A place where on can find giant agave growing next to a tall Pine. This is my third visit to this wonderful area and it won’t be my last. 🙏🏾✨

It’s mid way through the year and I’m excited to be experiencing a natural shift in perspective that has allowed for a more expansive view of time. With that comes the opportunity to open up space in my heart and mind again towards a passion project I started in the Fall of 2023.

Looking around at surf history, specifically surf photography books, I noticed ones of the early days in California or Hawaii, but none of them that captured stories of what it was like during the genesis of surfing in Mexico and how the sport has grown over time. As a person whose always had love for my parents homeland, surfing, and history, I wanted to create a photography book that would be the first-of-its-kind as an exploration that fuses art, history, and athletic stories through a photographic journey of Cultura Costeña.

Delving into the heart of Mexican surf culture, Gotas de Agua will be a contemporary historical narrative that not only traces the sport’s evolution in the country but also seeks to understand how Mexico’s vibrant culture uniquely shines through its approach to wave riding.

The piece is currently self-funded and in partnership with the talented surf photographer @_alex.patrick
It will incorporate local photographers and archival shots along the way as we visit the states of Baja, Oaxaca, Colima, Guerrero, and Sinaloa.

Si Dios quiere, this book will slowly be chipped away at over the next couple of years and eventually distributed worldwide. It’s a scary thing to put what was once just an idea in my head into motion cuz now have to see it through haha but If you’re reading this, I’m excited to see how it grows and evolves and hope we can find ways for you to be apart of it as well🖤

For now, I want to express the sincerest form of gratitude to all the surfers from Nayarit:
Kalle Carranza, Miguel Sinclair, Bota, Santo, Miriam, Tigre, and Diego Cadena. All who welcomed me into their home and space to support the project and openly share their story. I hope to make this project honors your hospitality and inspirational connections to the ocean.

My episode on @rei Co Op Studios-Wild Ideas Worth Living is live!

The show is centered on conversations with people who took the path less traveled and brought their wildest ideas to life.

I had a wonderful conversation with inspirational Shelby @shelbystanger on my experience in the Navy, my Yucatec Maya heritage, @ryder.england and I’s 1500 mile bike ride through Mexico, and how all those paths led me to start @un.mar.de.colores.

Streaming now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

“Kababayan” means…“Fellow countryfolk”.
@kaidiaz connected with @djjavier while he was in town painting our Un Mar De Colores mural which led him to chop up this sweet little video from the film photos he shot that day. Incredibly stoked the Un Mar mural is inspiring connections between talented BIPOC creatives as well as increasing representation of BIPOC communities along Californias Coastlines.

For those that don’t know, Un Mar has a little sense of home and belonging now in Encinitas thanks to our new mural located at the mom & pop shop - Just Peachy Market. Go check it out, take a selfie, buy some organic local fruit, tag us.
