A peak into my solo trip to Bali last September 🇮🇩 ———————————————————— Last June I deactivated this account for what wound up being 8 months. Shortly after, I booked the month of September in Bali for my first ever solo trip. That turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.. A chapter of my story I will never forget.. Unplugged and closer to source than I have ever been. I let a few family and friends know right before and then dipped. I went inward, and immersed myself in a season off grid. Occasionally connecting with people I met from all over the world. I understand I am incredibly fortunate to be in a position to have made that dream a reality. Sharing this as a peak into that experience, to the soundtrack of my new song “Timezones” (where the trip is briefly mentioned) I highly encourage anyone considering something similar to take that leap of faith.. I came back renewed with a deep appreciation for not only my life, but this beautiful planet I look forward to seeing more of. Love from my screen to yours 🙏🏾 (I told myself no more long captions 😅)

Sincerely grateful to be included in the new “As we Speak: Rap Music on Trial” documentary on @paramountplus I had no idea that a poem I recited at @leila_steinberg mic sessions 11 months ago would be included in a @sundanceorg selected documentary of this magnitude. More importantly, it is an honor to be involved in a project with such an important cause. Black music has been criminalized since it’s inception. Our art is surveilled and used against us to strip and suppress our humanity. This film both eloquently and authentically portrays our community while addressing the justice system that fails to protect and serve our people. @kembaland did an incredible job taking the audience through cultural history and current events. His poetry, narration and honest dialogue with Hip Hop artists in their respective communities was masterful. Was a mystic coincidence to learn he is also a @1beatmusic fellow. This past Sunday, I flew back from New Orleans on my birthday, closing a life changing chapter I will never forget… For the last month, I was out of town at a global music exchange program called One Beat.  Out of 5,000 applicants, I was 1 of 25 musicians selected to attend this residency & tour. I was 1 of only 5 selected from the US. When I tell you, I genuinely feel I was surrounded by some of the greatest musicians on this planet… 17 countries. Several languages, cultures, instruments and creative approaches. I came into this program with no idea of what I was walking into. Even if I researched, I couldn’t have known. 2 weeks of a residency on a beautiful state of the art campus in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Then 2 weeks of a tour traveling through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi & finally New Orleans. Thank you to the US Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs for sponsoring this program. Thank you to the @foundsound and @1beatmusic staff for your carefully constructed and executed vision. Thank you for allowing us artists to feel supported, empowered & taken care of to focus on our music with no distraction of survival. From the phenomenal residency chef @lexawalshstudios to the medical care and per diems, you gave us a freedom some of us have never known. I feel like I fell in love with music all over again.

Poetry performed at Olympic High School in Santa Monica with @leila_steinberg and @aim4theheartorg. It was an absolute pleasure to share perspective in the form of rhymes for the next generation. No music, No mic, just testimony. Love 🙏🏾

Still surreal... I waited until I was back and could properly sit in some reflection to share the most fulfilling part of my trip. It was such an honor to be trusted to teach a course that I designed in a Japanese International high school. Shout out to my good friend @lionel_tristan for letting me take the reins and create the 4 month curriculum, class name and course description for this semester. “The Art and Science of Release Therapy” is about emotional literacy and healthily channeling emotions through arts. It was such a blessing to pass along the therapeutic tools that I have accumulated and cultivated along my journey. Turned out two of the kids in the class were also in the first group I taught virtually in 2020. To hear how that one hour impacted their journeys was beyond heartening. To be there in the flesh and officially begin this teaching sector of my purpose felt divine. The administrators of the school loved the class so much that they asked me to lead an additional teacher workshop! We unpacked and reflected on the school’s mission with a healthy and honest discourse about aspirations vs action and solution oriented means to improvement. Thank you @leila_steinberg for allowing me to represent @aim4theheartorg and elaborate on your emotional literacy curriculum. Cheers to more of this for the foreseeable future. Love 🤎 At the end of our 5th and last session, I gifted the entire class custom Japanese aapotss hoodies. Was so dope to see everyone put them on right away! Last slide is a snippet of a poem I shared in week 2. I shared my films, poetry, creative process and story. Beyond excited to see how they apply what we covered. The youth are the future 🙏🏾
