Shu Lea Cheang participates in the exhibition Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) @ 80WSE New York University, September 11 – December 20, 2024.

Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas, racial phantasms, and political imaginaries.

Presenting over 90 artists and collectives, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.

Legacies features works – paintings, drawings, sculpture, and new media, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history, cultural studies, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities, political horizons, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.

The exhibition also features newly commissioned installations, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film, Fresh Kill (1994).

Organized by Howie Chen, Curator at 80WSE, Jayne Cole Southard, PhD., CUNY, and christina ong, PhD.

Incredibly excited and proud to announce that our exhibition, Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001), is opening on September 11 at NYU’s @80wse Gallery.

The exhibition highlights over 90 artists and collectives and is the first of its kind exclusively focused on multigenerational artists of Asian descent in New York City. So much love and care has gone into this show, but we really could not have done it without the artists whose works inspire, challenge, and encourage us to think of the ways that our cultural heritage, lifeworlds, and histories impact us. >>Swipe to see sweet selfies taken over the years with some of the artists featured in the show.

@mistermisterchen , Dr. @notjanecole, and I have been working on Legacies for nearly two years and we’re so thrilled to see it come to life after so much planning and dreaming. Getting out of the disciplinary boundaries of Sociology and into the art world has been a joyful, challenging, and altogether enlivening experience. This interdisciplinary and collaborative process highlights not only the artworks, but the history from which Asian American art has come. From Basement, to Godzilla, to the Asian American Arts Centre, and beyond, you’ll see the incredible talent and stories of artists of Asian descent who called New York City their home.

Howie, Jayne, and i are each experts in our own right, with our own perspectives & disciplinary frameworks guiding us. But through our care & mutual respect for one another and these histories, i believe we’ve created a show that will spark further interest and conversation on what it means to be “Asian American” and the role that New York City has played in cultivating diasporic art. i’m especially grateful to our producer, Jon Huron and our curatorial assistants, Gracia Brown and Gini Lee, for keeping us on task and seeing our visions through. Thanks to @teigerfoundation & @apainstitute for their support.

Our opening reception is from 5-7pm on Sept 11, and the show runs through Dec 20. The exhibition is free & open to the public, so come check it out! i hope that this show lets us see ourselves little more fully. ❤️

Excited to announce the opening of “Legacies” survey exhibition this Fall at @80wse. Years in the making working with curator dream team @notjanecole and @ong_going and made possible by @teigerfoundation. Stay tuned.

80WSE is pleased to announce our fall exhibition, “Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)”, an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968.

Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas, racial phantasms, and political imaginaries.

Legacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic, social, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.

Opening this Friday at @80WSE for “Seasonal Affective”. Entrancing, rarely exhibited videos selected from the catalog of @electronicartsintermix Featuring Charles Atlas / Merce Cunningham, Stephen Beck, Forcefield, Maggie Lee, and Chris Marker. Join us in traversing autumnal and brumal time.

Opening reception Friday, November 10th 6–8PM

Seasonal Affective culminates with a rare presentation of Coast Zone (1983), a beautiful collaboration between Merce Cunningham and Charles Atlas originally shot in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. A hypnotic meditation on camera movement and dance choreography, the film features a composition by Larry Austin performed by John Cage, Martin Kalve, Takehisa Kosugi and David Tudor, setting the dancers to minimalistic percussion and quiet voiceover repeating the word "discordance."
