When I Was Seventeen: A Portable Exhibition in Book Form
When I Was Seventeen is a portable exhibition presented in book form, inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s La boîte-en-valise (1935–1941). After stepping away from traditional exhibitions, Duchamp focused on a project that encapsulated his artistic career through a collection of small, portable reproductions.
This project reimagines the book as an artistic vessel. It brings together bronze sculptures, drawings, paintings, and 25 years of personal Google search data, blending these elements into a multi-layered reflection on youth and memory. The bronzes, crafted at the renowned Swiss foundry Kunstgiesserei, are inspired by 15th-century Benin craftsmanship, connecting historical artistry with modern technology.
The project also features live music sessions, recorded on cassette and available for download via Spotify, adding an auditory layer to this multimedia experience. With contributions from 15 graphic designers, When I Was Seventeen pushes the boundaries of the book medium—transforming it into an exhibition, performance, and living archive. Like the Bible, where stories transcend the physical pages, this project uses the book to explore deeply personal and universal narratives.

My approach to the Maison Margiela invitation is inspired by John Galliano’s deeply personal style and my own belief in turning real moments into something delicate. Every detail reflects the heart of his work, drawing from materials and symbols that hold personal meaning. The invitation includes sketches from his couture designs, with striking elements like the merkin, showcasing his bold, unconventional spirit. These sketches fold into a hand-covered cloth folder, unfolding into a poster signed by Galliano himself. It’s like taking a slice from a cake—each piece, though small, holds its own significance.

These images were chosen for an edition of Modern Matter, with a straightforward idea in mind: to capture routine moments from unplanned situations, working mostly on my own to create a document. I've always liked the idea of being a guest in Modern Matter, as much as collaborating with others. I wanted to step into someone else's shoes, without worrying about the outcome. I truly enjoyed working on this issue.

In collaboration with Sprüth Magers, this issue of Modern Matters explores the essence of beauty. A few years back, this journey began with a shared fascination between the gallery and myself: the color red.
Red is my personal color—resonant and vibrant, much like the lady in red serenaded in the night. It commands attention, reminiscent of the sultry allure of the red light district, where it bathes everything in a passionate glow.
Red is not merely a color but an emblem of beauty and accomplishment. It stands out, bold and unapologetic, yet possesses an underlying sophistication. The blend of red is both educative and gentle, illustrating the power of vibrancy and the subtlety of elegance.

Things have changed dramatically: I met the legendary artist Tricky on the streets of Paris. We connected instantly, talking and vibing together. We decided to go back to his apartment and studio, where we created an incredible series of private photos over the course of a few hours. It was pure magic—fun and inspiring. These images were later published in the first issue of Modern Matter magazine. Thank you, Tricky! @modernmattermagazine@olu.odukoya

Using the Heinz brand as a metaphor highlights the power of branding and its associations, much like fashion. I am captivated by the notion that an image can weave a narrative, blurring the lines between concept and reality. Heinz, known for its reliability, serves as a perfect parallel to this idea.
