The New School, in collaboration with the Village Preservation (@gvshp_nyc), is honoring the renowned Harlem-born writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin. Featuring a passage from Baldwin’s book Nothing Personal, the installation encourages passersby to reflect on the writer’s legacy, impact on American culture, and powerful depictions of the struggles, aspirations, and hopes of the silenced and unheard.

Centennial celebrations for James Baldwin are happening across New York City, including JIMMY! God’s Black Revolutionary Mouth at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (@schomburgcenter). At the Schomburg Center, selections from the James Baldwin Papers that highlight his literary career and legacy from childhood to death, along with items from other research collections, are on display through February 28.

Mihika Poddar @mihika_art (BFA @parsonsfinearts ‘25) created the sculptural installation “Window” for Burma Social @burmasocial.sg, a Burmese restaurant located in Singapore. “Window” transports viewers to where their food originates by invoking ripples of water in a rice paddy field.

“In this moment where it feels like crises are piling on top of one another, I find it really soothing to look back into history,” says Stan Walden (@parsons.arch ‘24), curator of the exhibit “AIDS at The New School: What is Remembered?”

Through a mix of archival research and interviews with current faculty, staff, and students, Walden curated an exhibit that spoke to the impact HIV/AIDS had on the New School community. Key to this are the listening consoles, designed by M. Arch ‘23 graduates Maya McGlynn and Ross Myren, where visitors can listen to oral histories from New School community members.

The exhibit will remain on view in the Aronson Gallery until January 12, 2025. Learn more at the link in our bio.

Daenie Park @bbyrlv (BBA Strategic Design & Management ‘25) took inspiration from the shape of a stethoscope to create an artwork narrative around ‘hacking’ others’ ideas. 👂

“Fashioned after blood vessels, the red wire crochet metaphorically signifies the presence of a system within my body capable of hacking, completed with ears engraved with the words ‘Your ideas are getting snooped on.’ The collected ideas from the ears are stored in a memory chip situated within the central resin segment…I also sought to introduce the computer system into the organic framework for a contrasting effect.”

As part of her Communication Design Systems for Brands course, Ketana Anekar @ketanaa.aa (@parsons_cd ‘26) conceptualized a vibrant, youthful brand identity for DAZE, an all-inclusive makeup and skincare line.

Students in the Systems for Brands course examine how various design elements—including logos, mission statements, and user guidelines—can be used to create visual experiences for brands.

In October, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library acquired seven zines by Ares Maia @ares.maia (@parsons_cd ‘20). Her whimsical and intimate style reflects through her work with pieces like “Lady Bugs,” a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother Joana whose name means “ladybug” in Portuguese.

Maia’s creative process is hands-on and reflective, combining materials like textured paper, custom stamps, and stitching to create unique, handmade pieces where her craftsmanship add charm and individuality.

During her time at Parsons, Maia’s professional career was shaped by formative experiences both in the classroom and through internships with leading organizations such as Saturday Night Live, Marvel, Sony Music, NBC News, and others. Now a senior designer, she balances her corporate role with a vibrant artistic practice, driven by her commitment to amplifying underrepresented immigrant perspectives in the art world.

Meet Cherisha Surana (MPS Fashion Management ’24), with a portfolio of internships at Hermès of Paris, Altuzarra, and Bibhu Mohapatra, as well as collaborations with leading fashion houses during NYFW. Now, as part of the Women@Dior x UNESCO mentorship program, she is channeling her passion into creating a transformative Dream for Change project. Her mission? To empower young women, inspiring a ripple effect of strength, courage, and opportunity across the globe.

Experiencing multiple internships gave her the chance to build invaluable industry connections, gain hands-on experience, and deepen her understanding of luxury fashion. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “Going to every event, staying connected with professors, and building relationships is essential. You never know where your professors might take you! Their networks and insights truly open doors. Trusting and staying close to them was key in finding my path during school.”

At Parsons, she acquired the skills and experience that have been instrumental in her internships and current role. She reflects, ‘From fashion and technology courses to leadership classes, every lesson had practical applications’. She says, “The skills I gained taught me how to translate theory into action in real-world scenarios. It’s about how you take what you learn and apply it effectively in a professional setting.”

Inspired by childhood trips to antique malls with her mother, Juliet Blehm’s @julietblehmart (BFA @parsonsfinearts ‘27) “Sparks” celebrates the “vitality that persists within discarded objects.”

“I view these pieces not only existing as a piece of history, but also as possessing a living memory that continually sparks within them. I think it is so important to remember the lives of older objects as they are physical remainders of the past and tell stories that might have otherwise have been forgotten. Rising from a pile of unkempt clothes and fabrics emerges a hand, its life force (represented by the globe, which lights up as a lamp) glowing into the atmosphere.”
