As we mark a year since 7 October 2023, we must resist the lure of hate and extremism. We must insist on deep and intersectional solidarity, on alliances that transcend the specificity of our lived experiences and biographies. Never again must truly mean never again. Today we grieve the cruel and painful loss of over 43,000 civilians in Palestine, Israel and Lebanon. Trauma and grief should never be instrumentalised. We must hold space for mourning. As we look back on an excruciating year, let us remember the words of Masha Gessen, who has pointed out that when it comes to brutality and the violation of humanitarian principles, it is the responsibility of those of us who can afford to speak out, to rise above silent complicity. Gessen has said: “We are not any smarter, kinder, wiser, or more moral than people who lived 90 years ago. We are just as likely to needlessly give up our political power and to remain wilfully ignorant of darkness as it is dawning. But we know something they didn’t know: We know that the Holocaust is possible.” The conclusion that Gessen derives from this knowledge should be obvious to us all at this point in history. They conclude that it is our collective responsibility to speak up to the ends of preventing “what we know can happen from happening.” What Gessen is saying here is more than: “Never Again.” What Gessen is saying here, is: “Never Again for Anyone.” Israeli authorities do not allow foreign journalists into Gaza. Since 7 Oct 2023, approx. 130 journalists have been killed while trying to bear witness to the ongoing carnage that Palestinians are facing. 100% of the profits generated after production costs from the sale of this item will be donated directly to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), a union to which approximately 80% of Palestinian journalists belong.
