Spatial audio is transforming our interaction and perception of sound.
Modem teamed up with composer @prsseau and writer @pjmaughann to navigate the vast promises and implications of this new sonic realm.
The Infinite Surround reimagines the process of listening, composing and recording as the world of spatial computing takes shape.

the yamaha ns-10 series, introduced in 1978 and discontinued in 2001, intriguingly aligns with the recording industry’s golden age, culminating as the digital music era dawned with napster, mp3 compression, and peer-to-peer filesharing.
designed by akira nakamura and the yamaha design team, the ns-10s featured a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing simple, robust materials such as black wood for the cabinet and a distinctive white paper cone for the drivers, making them a standout feature on top of almost every studio mixing desk.
notoriously criticized for their « bad » sound, the ns-10s paradoxically became a fixture in smoke-filled studios worldwide, prized for their brutally honest, flat response that mercilessly revealed flaws in recordings. particularly, the ns-10m studio model (pictured), with its frequency range of 60 hz to 20 khz, was emblematic of this era, but found itself ill-equipped to handle the sub-bass-heavy genres that gained prominence in the early 2000s.
yet, their legacy persists, with many studios maintaining ns-10s for their unparalleled transparency in mid to high frequencies. they embody the intricate balance between technological progression and the timeless value of critical listening.

Working on the SS02 sound system was a creative journey we started together with Pierre Rousseau (@prsseau). We spent a lot of time brainstorming and refining ideas, each step of the process brought us closer to something that felt both unique and true to the spirit of the concept of SS02. The outcome of this collaboration is the first custom physical copy, crafted from stained birch plywood.

the ooc-ss02 sound system is designed with two central concepts that redefine the relationship between sound, space, and the individual: human size and spatial modularity. together, these ideas reshape the way we engage with sound, transforming it into an immersive, personal, and creative experience.
last week at @quaibranly in paris, a spatial sound installation and original show soundtrack by @stereo___image for @etudesstudio@aigle exp-02, set design by @avoir.ig, production by @kitty_events.
following a poetic brief of just a few sentences (« moving through the landscape », « the presence of nature », « lines », « ascent / progression », « sensory », « encountering the mirage », « the cycle of a day », « human or animal presence »), i designed a complex soundscape paying hommage to walking, the main inspiration for my friends @aurelien_arbet@jeremie_egry and @joselamali’s collection, as well as the central movement of a fashion runway.
the 45-minute soundscape was composed of sounds evocative of the themes above, randomized bells, recordings of walking across various terrains, filtered drones modulated with « noise », and more. eventually, these distinct sources spread around the location synchronized in order to form a more rhythmic and theme-driven piece, in order to support a more intense walking segment, only to then disintegrate back into the soundscape, as if a storm had passed, or the « mirage » had disappeared.
sixteen sound sources were assigned to twenty-six l-acoustics x8 speakers and 12 sb15m subwoofers along the garden-turned-runway, creating an immersive augmentation of the garden’s natural soundscape, an already unique listening experience in the city due to the garden’s glass enclosure, which partially isolates it acoustically from the nearby road.

last week in paris, a multichannel sound installation for @on and @loewe commissioned by @avoir.ig.
asynchronous synthetic experiments evocative of water, wind, rain, heat and more are laid out with particular attention to interstitial space, paying homage to the unpredictable soundscapes of natural environments.
ten distinct sound sources are assigned to eight l-acoustics 5XT compact speakers across the floorplan as well as two l-acoustics SB10 subwoofers. the speakers are in some instances visible, in some instances hidden, but always reinforcing the symbolism at play.
« inside becomes outside, territories become rooms, grounds become floors, globes becomes walls and maybe nature becomes culture » @avoir.ig
further exploring this tension, a breathing performance by @salomechatriot alters the properties of the sound installation. an arduino board programmed by the artist tracks and converts the intensity of her inspiration and expiration into midi data, which is then fed to @c74connect@ableton and integrated to the sound design.
