We all wear a multitude of masks. Sometimes the masks we wear around certain people are more transparent and lighter to wear, other times they are made of something impenetrable and have to be chipped off with more heavy duty tools. Sometimes we rip them off like "Amanda" does. Other times they get knocked off when we least expect because someone unhooks it with a triggering comment. Sometimes they slip off because we're just too tired to keep it on. "IMPOSTERS" is online now via @nowness as part of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek Made in support of the mental health programmes of the South East and East Asian Centre @seeac_uk Stills @isaaceastgate The film emerged from conversations about mental health in the wake of the pandemic. When thinking about ways to conjure facades, masks, and how they work in tandem with societal norms, we were inspired by the work of artist Cindy Sherman. I’ve found her work to explore these themes with a lot of self-awareness, so it felt like a good starting place. Like Sherman, we wanted to anchor the film and performance around a character, so it features our incredible performer Naomi Weijand wearing make up, contacts, prosthetics and a wig to present as “Amanda”. Amanda is shown sitting as if ready to take a ‘press shot’ or portrait for some sort of feature on her latest book, but slowly we see that this is not a still frame but a moving image, and with that the cracks emerge. Intended ultimately to be open-ended for the audience’s interpretation, the process of building her persona and look was highly collaborative between myself, Naomi, Aya Kaido our Producer and our design team - Make Up Artist Grace Ellington, Hair Stylist Claire Moore, and Costume Designer Neesha Champaneria. However, as we delved further into what we were attempting to parody and portray, it inevitably had to become an act of self-reflection. Where do we sit in comparison to this character? What is our relationship with this character? How do we present to the world? What may we be signalling? What do people see and not see? In a world that increasingly relies on presenting ourselves through curated imagery, we are often forced to manage these overwhelming feelings from behind a facade - becoming imposters in our own skin. A group of us came together to make something that tackled these feelings head on and the result is this film.
