#tbt❤️ a major turning point in my practice! Quicken 2011 Mixed media including wood, cement, paint 150 x 900cm. Quicken addresses the sanctity of human life by confronting the self-destructive trajectory of our species, the misdeeds of man and society’s increasing alienation from our shared spirituality. I modelled it after a minaret, which I broke in sections as a demonstrative gesture of the discord wrought by man. Originally inspired by reports of a suicide bombing at a mosque in Afghanistan, I see this work as a metaphor that speaks of greater things… a messenger of the failure of communication and the brutality which ensues. It declares a state of emergency for our earthly co-habitation, but not without hope for resilience. Within the sculpture’s core, viewers will notice the faint beating of a heart. This recording, taken at the moment of a baby’s birth, leads the viewer away from the horror of modern warfare and returns him to the divine rhythm of life at its most innocent. #tbt #sculprure #art #saadqureshi #peace #story #architecture

• @royal_sculptors We’re back with our friends at Thomas Dane Gallery @thomasdanegallery who are kindly hosting our pop-up exhibition ‘The 10gram Challenge 2024’ held in support of ‘Creating a Home for Sculptors’ at Dora House and that will turn our damp, unusable basement into a beautiful, self-contained one-bedroom flat and studio space for visiting artists. Join us (11am to 8pm) for an opportunity to browse and buy miniature sculptures created by an amazing selection of artists who earlier this year accepted the challenge of creating a unique, tiny sculpture from a 10 gram piece of wax, based on a concept from Alex Davies founder of Milwyn Casting Fine Art Foundry, (where the sculptures have been cast in bronze), and member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Portable Landscapes series started in 2011, with first public showing at Gazelli Art House in 2012 for my solo show Other Cresents Other Moons. Delighted to share images of ‘Abaabil’, 2020 @saad_qureshi_studio shown for the first time in the exhibition ‘Of Paradise and Other Places’ at #5howickplace @hs_projects This painted bronze sculpture speaks of the universal human desire to fly and the fascination with feathered beings. Birds took root in Qureshi’s imagination through the myths of his childhood. According to an ancient tale, the abaabil birds are a divinely inspired flock, who defeated a large army by dropping burning pebbles upon them. The abaabil can be said to combine matter and aura, existing in two different dimensions - one physical and one cultural. Abaabil also alludes to metaphorical flight: that of the mind through imagination and learning, activities which we engage in both privately and collectively and which hold a special fascination for Qureshi as an artist.
