✨There are moments that take our breath away, not because of their grandeur, but because of their truth. Six pages in the November issue of Vogue Magazine, captured by the legendary Annie Leibovitz, is one of those moments. But it is not the recognition that moves me; it is writer’s’ focus on National Black Theatre’s work. It’s Annie’s lens capturing @kristenadelecalhoun intergenerational odyssey about the healing power of blood memory. Black women of every age, background and body type, gracing these glossy, exquisite pages, long reserved for the most elite…taking up space, unapologetically moving from the margins to center stage.

A reminder that our story is not just about the scale of our project and partnerships; it is about the profound love and sacrifice of a visionary woman, Dr. #BarbaraAnnTeer, who planted seeds of possibility in soil often deemed barren. Collectively, ours is a story of mothers and the warrior seeds they sow deep within their daughters’ spirit. It’s about fearless women who take risks, bet on each other, and are rewarded by the strength of sisterhood.

My mother believed in art as a tool for liberation, and I have carried that belief as we build the theater of the future—a space rooted in heart, heritage, and Harlem. Her dream, my North Star: “We must build cultural centers where we can be free, open, and Black.” This space is more than a theater—it’s a home for our voices, our dreams, and our future.

Deep gratitude to @dasha @fridaescobedo and Vogue for joining me in this dream space, and every soul who has been part of this journey—especially @jaymc86 , @barriekoegel , our incredible Board of Directors, The City and State of New York, our funders, and every individual donor who has helped us reach nearly 70% of our goal. We are building something greater than ourselves. Let’s make history and cross the finish line together! join us at @natblacktheatre, be part of this legacy, and don’t forget to pick up the print issue or read the full story online via the link in bio!

✨T H E N E W A M E R I C A N D R E A M✨

So this is a pinch me moment….I grew up understanding the world’s axis through the lens of the Goddess that is @oprah . So many of my mother’s friends were were made globally visible by Ms. O as she lifted them up as her friends, mentors, teachers and guests. As a young woman mapping what my North Star might be, her show was my compass that signaled “arrival”.

Sadly her show ended as I began to understand & dive into my life’s work at #nationalblacktheatre and our paths have never crossed in a meaningful way. I lost my mom and sooo many of her sister friends who’s paths were paved by Oprah’s light.

But light is a funny thing. It is inextinguishable when it is lit from within. Now as a woman, mother, CEO, advocate and activist my North Star revolves singularly around building & serving community. It is through this service to Black Artists and cultural production that I have arrived. 💜🙏🏾🤩

Thank you @oprah & @oprahdaily for including me & the work of @natblacktheatre @jaymc86 @gozeface in your list of 50 Black trailblazers moving our world forward! We sat down with the eternally eloquent @nikkiogun for @harpersbazaarus to talk all things #BlackTheater in the service of #Liberation, #Healing, #Resilience and most important as an instrument of #JOY! #FutureRising #LetsGo

This day, these women, the extreme amount of care, felt like a blessing. Such an honor to be included in this group of extraordinary women who have changed / are changing the face of theater. Thank you @harpersbazaarus for calling us all in to the brilliance of each other’s light and gifts. After such a dizzying year I can’t tell you how much I needed to feel their warmth. This shoot felt like home.💜 Harper’s Bazaar’s Art Issue is on stands now

24 hours in San Francisco to celebrate my effortlessly elegant and endlessly talented friend @asherald s opening at @sfmoma was the honor of a lifetime.

Amy, you are an alchemist of the highest order, shape-shifting the mundane and transforming WE the people into the sublime. To bear witness to your impossible journey, your unflinching commitment to chase out the devil by celebrating the details; your reverence to purpose and precision, to make real your mother’s legacy with every reverent brushstroke that blesses your immaculate canvases, is nothing short of a miracle.

Our people made whole in each stoic image. You. My friend. Are. The Miracle.

But it’s not your show or the breath of your work that I traveled across the country to see. No, instead it was you. The artist. The dreamer. The sister. The keeper of our stories. The reminder that we are worthy of being seen, celebrated, and immortalized—not despite who we are, but because of it.

Watching you walk through that gallery, head held high, surrounded by generations of stories you’ve so lovingly preserved, I was reminded that the magic is not just in your hands but lives eternally in your spirit.

I am so proud of you. Forever in awe of you.
With all my love, gratitude, and reverence.

Going to bed knowing whatever the morning brings, we still have each other. That hasn’t changed. We belong to each other. That hasn’t changed. We need each other now more than ever and we WILL get through this together. That will never change. Be gentle with yourself and each other in the coming days and weeks and as grief shows up remember it is not a destination, but rather a reminder of your capacity to love. I love you all so deeply. None of our energy has been in vain. This isn’t over. 🙏🏾💜🙏🏾

✨ Last night was a truly unforgettable celebration at the @studiomuseum Gala! Heartfelt congratulations to @thelmagolden on the announcement of her endowed position by @darrenwalker and the @fordfoundation —a deeply deserved recognition of your visionary leadership, Thelma.

And to the entire Studio Museum family, you make Harlem so proud! Cheers to curating a phenomenal evening filled with icons and allies of Black culture and artistry. From transformative conversations to moments of pure joy, the night reminded us all of the beauty, resilience, creativity, and brilliance that define our community—a much-needed respite from all of the rhetoric and weight we are collectively carrying. 🥂💜🧘🏾‍♀️ #studiomuseumgala2024

As the CEO of the @NatBlackTheatre, Sade Lythcott continues the revolutionary work her mother, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, started decades ago. Under Sade’s leadership, the theatre has become a bold space for Black stories, community healing, and artistic innovation.

In our interview, @sade1111 talks about the challenges of continuing her mother’s legacy while leading with love and courage, and shares her vision for the future of the National Black Theatre.

A night was had! History was made! The ancestors are proud! @karaakter win for @purliebway was written in the stars, etched by so many Black women, who innovated, originated, sacrificed and were ultimately ignored. Thank you Kara for seeing all of us, and reflecting us back with the depth of heart and unmeasured commitment. You stay reppin’ Harlem and we stay loving you!! @natblacktheatre is officially Tony award winning! 😭🙏🏾💜🏆

Gagged to have made it on to @voguemagazine best dressed list. Soooo grateful to be wearing head to toe custom @jcrew. Thank you @olympiamarie for your generosity! It was nothing short of a dream to channel my past life and design my look in collaboration with your genius team for this year’s @thetonyawards. Thank you David, Lilly, Cat, Daphne, Erik & Liv I have never felt more beautiful and chic (and got so many compliments ☺️) Thank you @jessica_mccormack for my 💎s. Y’all poured sooooo much love into every detail and I felt like a million bucks. P.S. b/c I’m getting soooo many beautiful inquiries about my skirt, my forever inspiration was the stoic beauty and strength of the indelible @simoneyvetteleigh ‘s work. Simone’s body of work permeate my imagination constantly & inspired by this season incredible materiality and iconic aesthetic of #jcrew.
