Introducing the Artists on Artists issue starring
@asherald and
@jonbatiste.
It’s been a busy year for the history-making painter and musician. Amy Sherald just opened “American Sublime,” her mid-career survey and largest exhibition yet, at the
@sfmoma; while Jon Batiste returned to his classical roots with his recent album “Beethoven Blues,” which presents modern renditions of the canonical composer’s works.
Despite their sweeping impacts on contemporary culture, both artists—shot by
@danascruggs in Sherald’s New Jersey studio—are careful to protect the delicate filament, that “pure thing,” at the heart of their work. “When you’re in that flow state, sometimes you forget how you got to the end result. I feel like a vessel. I work hard so I can then be in the moment like a kid,” Batiste tells Sherald. “It’s like a trance,” the painter adds. “The ideas come, and I do what I’m told.”
