A rare and special occasion to have both Winyo and Polycarp’s mamas in the studio for the first time and together to listen to what the two have been recently collaborating on and are about to release! It’s no surprise that one of my favorite people created another of my favorite people, and among these favorites is Auntie Nana, too. The beauty these ladies radiate from within surpasses even their outer beauty—an incredible feat, considering they’re truly some of the most stunning women I’ve ever known. And finally after all these years I got to put my Art History degree to use! My niece seemed genuinely interested in The Diego Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of Art and example of Mexican Muralism. (Was she humoring me?) Did You Know? - This mural is highlighting racial integration in Detroit’s workforce during segregation. - It portrays both the benefits and dangers of industrialization. - Depicts Aztec mythology, likening factories to the Earth’s womb. - Diego Rivera’s self-portrait is hidden in the murals. Some Fun Facts: The matriarch-led elephant herds of Lake Jipe rely on its wetlands for water and forage during dry seasons. Migrating between Kenya and Tanzania, they support biodiversity by dispersing seeds and managing vegetation. The matriarchs teach younger elephants essential survival skills, often seen leading them to feed and cool off along the lake’s edges and if you’re lucky you can witness them slashing in the lake for a mid afternoon swim. The lake itself is a shallow freshwater body, covering approximately 30 square kilometers, with an average depth of less than 3 meters.  It is primarily fed by the Lumi River, originating from Mount Kilimanjaro, and serves as a crucial water source for both wildlife and local communities. Being able to create for organizations and businesses I care about has enabled me to tap into a part of myself I never had the confidence and courage to explore before. Whether it was because people told me what my limitations were, that I wasn’t smart, creative, talented, experienced enough to do something beyond what they pigeonholed me into and then being silly enough to listen and believe them. I grew, but slowly. Now, here, with Dims, in this environment, unsupported I somehow have flipped the switch and persevered through the noise. I’ve reached a place of truly not caring what I look like (and sometimes quite literally) as long as I’m going after what I believe I can do. I know I can. And failing in so many ways I know is a part of the journey. Things that are meant for me will transpire in due time and I know that the most successful courageous and dopest people in life don’t ever hold themselves to “I should’ve done this by this age” or “I’m too old for that”. And so here I am in a garden in Oltepesi, right after sunrise, threw on a tshirt, didn’t even comb my hair and asked Dims to take a quick video. When he started to roll I spoke, unplanned but I wanted to see how it felt to share a bit of information about a place that has inspired me. You see, for years my friends have told me I should be hosting a show with all the traveling I do and I let the fear of how awkward I felt in front of the camera alone convince myself I shouldn’t and, even worse. couldn’t do it. So this morning I tried it, and it did feel awkward but so do most good things on the first couple of tries. So I think I’ll finally listen to my friend @kennywatson and take his advice given to me many moons ago.
