Gabriel Cabezas (@starbuckcello) made waves in his @nyphilharmonic debut performing Gabriella Smith’s (@gabriella.coati) powerful cello concerto, Lost Coast, conducted by the legendary John Adams!! 🥂 🌊
Reposted from @nyphilharmonic • Last night, NY Phil Artistic Partner John Adams led a program of music from the 20th and 21st centuries, mostly by American composers — including himself and his mentee @gabriella.coati, who was on hand to share insights into her work, “Lost Coast.” NY Phil Principal Trumpet Chris Martin and English horn player Ryan Roberts were the soloists in Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City” on what would have been the composer’s 124th birthday. And, on a program showcasing multiple generations of American music-makers, cellist Gabriel Cabezas (@starbuckcello) — soloist on Gabriella Smith’s piece — was reunited on stage with his former teacher, NY Phil Principal Cello Carter Brey (seen backstage)!
This program repeats once more, November 16 at 7:30 pm.

I am so so so happy and honored to be a @newmusicusa Creator Fund awardee this year! This grant will support a new project, TAROT, for cello and electronics, led by myself and cellist Gabriel Cabezas (@starbuckcello ). This collaboration will merge Louisville’s genderqueer community with Tarot readers, including audio stories from genderqueer individuals. I am so excited to explore the intersection of music, storytelling, and gender dynamics through the visual inspiration of Tarot cards! 🔮🎻🌈
As someone who is still untangling the complexities of genderqueer-ness, this project feels deeply personal. It is so empowering to be in charge of what I want to compose, and to choose who I collaborate with. I couldn’t be more thrilled to work alongside my buddy Gabe, and to connect more deeply with my local queer community. Thank you so much to New Music USA for supporting this new composition, and to Gabe for his help with getting this project going! I can’t wait share it with you all. 🙂
And congrats to all the awardees! Special shout-out to one of my besties @tylertaylorcomposer for also receiving an award - so happy to see good people from Louisville represented. 💙

#tbt new to YouTube - my piece "Concerto Grosso"
This performance (in September of 2022) was as fun as it gets. It was a privilege to be onstage with the wonderful energy of @dkpersonal and @nycpmusic, and it was a thrill to play a little viola in the solo quartet alongside simply extraordinary friends @stellafaychen, @emmafrucht, and @starbuckcello.
This piece came along when I was in college and I was lucky enough to play with Stella and Emma for the premiere, too. @katiehyunvln and @quodlibetensemble gave an outrageously beautiful performance a couple years later. It has been a continuously happy thing to have such fine friends involved in every stage of the piece's (and my) life.
Extra thanks to @dkpersonal for the excellent recording, which you will find in full at link in bio.

Artist Spotlight ✨
Gabriel Cabezas and Gabriella Smith met as freshman at the famed Curtis Institute. They immediately gravitated towards each other, and have been collaborating ever since. They released their first collaborative album, Lost Coast, in 2021 on Bedroom Community.
The 7-track album is anchored by the three-movement title work, which was inspired by the beauty and power of nature and the climate emergency which threatens to devastate it. The album was named one of NPR Music’s “Favorite Albums Of 2021” and a “Classical Album to Hear Right Now” by The New York Times.
The duo continues to write and record, and have performed in New York, Reykjavík, and Paris.

Artist Spotlight ✨
Cellist Gabriel Cabezas is a true 21st century musician. Recently named one of “23 Composers and Performers to Watch in ’23” by the Washington Post, he is a prolific and sought-after soloist and collaborator, as comfortable interpreting new works as he is with the pillar scores of the cello repertoire. Gabriel has appeared with America’s finest symphony orchestras, including those of Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland and New York, and has premiered dozens of new works by some of the most brilliant composers of his time.
Gabriel premiered Lost Coast, a daring work for solo cello and orchestra by Gabriella Smith, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel in May 2023.
Gabriel has recorded extensively as a studio musician, appearing on releases by Phoebe Bridgers, John Legend, Rufus Wainwright and Taylor Swift, among many others.
In 2016, Gabriel received the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, a career grant awarded to extraordinary classical Black and Latinx musicians, who, early in their professional career, demonstrate artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and ongoing commitment to leadership. Gabriel studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Carter Brey.
