Graded 07 : Venus Ex Machina Venus Ex Machina is the alias of Nontokozo F. Sihwa, a Scottish-born composer and sound designer. In 2021, she won the PRS Foundation Oram Award for innovation in music and sound technologies. Trained as a mathematician, she brings a boundless curiosity and exacting precision to her work, and has performed at festivals and events across Europe including Berlin Atonal, Rewire Festival (The Hague) and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) London. New work for Zara - Studio Collection FW24… Track ID: “Adverse” by Brecon Courtesy of @meshmeshmesh_ We spoke to Will, one half of Brecon to understand how “Adverse” was constructed… “The intention for Adverse was to create a thunderously dark apocalyptic track that very much felt like the world was ending. The sparseness of the harmonic and melodic elements allows for rhythmical interplay between the drums, bass and samples leaving the abrasive and mechanical sound design to take centre stage. The main lead line, draws inspiration from early 90’s rave stabs, the type you would find slapped to the front of a magazine in a free sample CD and is a definitive nod to the early free party scene that was so pivotal to our formative years”.
