This year’s adventures wouldn’t have been half as meaningful without the amazing village of friends and crew that supported me every single day, the creatives who opened new doors, and Lucas, who reminds me why I keep pushing forward. I’m grateful for every chance to learn, grow, and step outside my comfort zone. And let’s be honest, I’d be nowhere without Paige, Tim, Dustin, and Savannah (without you all, I’d be actually physically lost with uncharged batteries trying to find my way to a Panda Express) Thanks for showing up with all your wisdom, talent, music taste and gadgets—I appreciate you more than I can say.

In a week where my algorithm is all @cynthiaerivo (as it should be all the time) I’m adding to the beautiful images I keep seeing with some we made two weeks ago for the @latimes_envelope. What an outrageously lovely human. Thank you @cynthiaerivo.

@timwyoung - lighting
@dustin_b - digital tech
@shippa__ - production

The film, The Apprentice, is out tomorrow staring Jeremy Strong and @imsebastianstan. Here are a few images from a very fast press day supporting the film.

I first photographed Sebastian 9000 years ago when we were both babies for (a very missed) Blackbook Magazine. It was nice to meet again much later in our careers and see all his success.

It was my first time meeting Jeremy, albeit briefly, but his dedication to the craft was evident even in our short session.

Thanks for having me @apprenticemovie

“Maria,” now on Netflix, is a dramatization of how Maria Callas might have lived her final days in 1977, ambling through Paris and reflecting on her past: a troubled childhood; a tempestuous affair with Aristotle Onassis; and a career of artistic triumphs tempered by her enigmatic decision to walk away from all of it.

It’s not hard to imagine why Angelina Jolie, an Academy Award-winning actor who has spent decades as an object of public fascination, might identify with Callas: She too has memorably played her share of heroes and villains, mothers, wives and daughters, and she knows all too well what it’s like to be misapprehended by legions of admirers.

Pablo Larraín, who previously directed the historical dramas “Jackie” (which starred Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (in which Kristen Stewart played Princess Diana), says that he was drawn to extraordinary women who were able “to find their own identity and be who they were through their own will and capacity.”

Angelina Jolie graces the latest cover of #TheEnvelope.

@angelinajolie, Larraín, @ericvetrovocalcoach and costume designer @massimocantiniparrini sat down with @latimes_envelope. Read the full story at the link in @latimes’ bio.

During a recent shoot, my subject shared that she didn’t want to look directly at the camera, explaining that it felt too intimate and she wasn’t in a place to be that vulnerable. I appreciated her honesty and respected her request. At the same time, my work is rooted in intimacy and vulnerability, so it challenged me to find a way to still honor her while not veering from my point of view— a delicate balance that is never without effort.

Two weeks later, while editing some personal work, I noticed how much my choices and edits were still shaped by that experience. Without any direct eye contact, Mark, Connor, and I found a way to connect on an entirely different level—one I’m not sure I would have explored otherwise.

This was an important reminder that growth comes from stepping into situations that challenge and stretch you—even scare you. 20 years in, I still needed this nudge. You have to embrace the discomfort and be willing to see where it takes you.

Speaking of, two years ago I walked into a bar, saw a T-shirt I recognized and walked up to a table of strangers. (That act itself is uncomfortable for some, but not this New Yorker). That is how I met @cswerth_it & @mark.nowicki on what turned out to be the eve of their wedding. Now I consider them friends and trusted collaborators. Thank you for making beautiful things with me.

And maybe, if you made it through this opus of a caption, you might feel inspired to step into something that both scares and excites you. It’s almost 2025 so there is no time like the present.

Cristin Milioti gets self-conscious about sounding too “actor-y” in interviews, and explains that she usually cringes when she hears a performer referring to a character in the third person. But she can’t resist doing the same when talking about Sofia Gigante, née Falcone, her crime-boss villain in HBO’s “The Penguin.”

@cristinmilioti, speaking on Zoom from her home in New York, explains that she loves Sofia. “She’s my favorite character I’ve ever played.”

When I first moved to New York in the early 2000s, the romance of the city was something of a mirage to me. In fact it felt indifferent, even cruel. Online dating was beginning to seep into the cultural consciousness. There was no swiping right or left yet. We were still finding our way through dimly lit bars and stumbling into chance encounters. But New York has always thrived on the mythology of randomness, on the idea that anything can happen. You hear it in every story—how they met at a magazine stand, how they locked eyes on the L train, how they happened to be at the same party in some illegal Bushwick loft. In New York, it’s not about fate. It’s about luck. And everyone’s waiting for their lucky strike.

A few months ago, one idea turned into another, and we paid homage to this belief in a record number of hours, with a lot of love and a lot of laughs on the Lower East Side. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible and for sharing in that faith that something extraordinary is always around the corner.

Thanks to all the people who helped make this work possible including @nanlite_global who have amazing continuous lights.

My mom and brother humored me and let me play around with my graphlex last week. Very grateful they did. I love large format and this seemed like the perfect occasion for it.

Over a hundred years ago Henry Adams wrote, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Those words still ring so true.

I can think of all of the teachers who influenced and supported me along the way— Ms. Hamilton, Mr. Wood, Tracey Atlee, Andrew Moore— and how far even a little bit of encouragement would carry me.

Last year, my boys were new to their school, and @lucas_jackson_ and I were truly floored by the teachers, staff and community of @al305unitedbrooklyn.  What a truly devoted group of humans, dedicated to the enrichment and development of our children. They are such a gift.

Here are a few portraits I made of them last year as we celebrate them today (and everyday) and get ready to head into another amazing year.

Also thank you to @jzouki for asking me to make these portraits and meet all these amazing people. And @timwyoung @dustin_b @shippa__ for helping make this possible that day on the handball court!
