This past spring, whilst I was packing my entire life to move south to Virginia, I went over to the UK with my work spouse @kaufyismynamo and we made one of my favourite records to date with absolute legends @marychapincarpenter @juliefowlis and @karinepolwart. the band was @cham_ralston on bass, Chris Vatalaro on drums, @robburgermusic on keys, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh on hardanger d’amore, and Josh on guitar. We tracked it at @realworldstudios with @mateykay as my first mate. Tracked mostly live, in a semi circle, and mixed back here this summer at @theisokon - one of the first records I mixed in my new studio. I adore this record, and I can’t say enough about how deeply honoured I am to have spent this time with these fine humans, making this beautiful music. I cannot wait for this to be in the world.

Today marks 10 years that she has been with me, doing this thing called love. I wish so deeply there could be another 10. I’ve always been a mid century guy. From my 20’s onward, I never paid much mind to old farmhouses. I thought their misaligned anti-symmetry and idiosyncratic quirks were annoying and unsophisticated. I liked ‘clean lines’ and angular, intellectually satisfying design. But in my 40s, I came to desire the character, the weirdness, the soul of old farmhouses. Built as much by chance as by hand. Built with stone from the ground they sat on, wood from the trees they cleared to make room for it. True marks, not of humankind’s intelligence, but of its perseverance. And that is an equal partner in the marvel of human existence. Anyway - here are some photos of our old farmhouse. Likely built originally in the late 1700s, and then added onto in the 1800s, and again in the early 20th century. The floors are crooked, but the ceilings are tall. Two centuries of humans have shaped the energy here, and after only 2 months here, we have become the newest stewards of this weird, quirky, and charming farmhouse. #farmhouse #shenandoahvalley #virginia #antique #gothic #farm

Though I’ve spent much time around horses in my life, Freddie Hubbard Mercury is my first horse, that I am charged with caring for, training, working with, partnering with. Horsemanship, at its most beautiful and transformative, is a mediation on patience and calmness. Stillness, a quiet, comes over you, as you recognize that this animal will come to rely on you for the proper expression of language and movement, to build a lifelong trust that can only be broken by your own mistakes. It is a pressure, but also an acceptance of self inflection and profound self understanding. They say that our horses become mirrors of ourselves. In many senses, I have found this already to be true. And in every sense, this journey is one I am fully present for. #horsemanship #quarterhorse #groundwork #patience #quiet #stillness
