“Young man!” a voice shouted down the phone. “We’re all different! But we’re all the same. And we’re all God’s children.”
Thus began my short, intense friendship with Frank Lucianna, 99-year-old attorney, as we followed him on his final criminal trial.
In January 2022, over very mediocre sushi in Tribeca,
@natehurtsellers convinced me that I could direct a film. Nate taught me that you either lock a lens case or leave the lid open. Those are in fact Nate’s two modes: locked in and grinding, or heart open wide to friendship.
I also introduced him to his wife
@mo_gonzalo while filming FRANK and
@renfaireshow. I think we’re even.
I have been lucky to collaborate with
@porsche_9_11 for more than three years. She’s a story genius and source whisperer. She failed to convince me, however, that ketchup is a viable salad dressing. (See attached photo.)
When I first started this project, I thought directors made documentaries. I soon decided it was DPs. And then, finally, sitting down in a sweltering home office, the lone mini fan pointed at
@dustinwaldman, I realized the editors do the work. And work. And work.
Dustin patiently explained what all the buttons do, tried to stop me from falling in love with temp music, and once, after an ill-advised lunch of Chongqing Spicy Chicken, let me remove my shirt and writhe on his couch while he kept cutting. Underneath the Film Buff is a humanist who gets the big things in life, and infuses his work with that love.

For
@newyorkermag,
@paulmoakley is patient, funny, and has exquisite taste. I feel lucky to know him!
Finally, thank you to Frank Lucianna for letting us into his world. He was a giant to his family, his clients, and his friends. Without hyperbole, he is the greatest American I have ever met. He is greatly missed.
