AIR CANADA | ‘Ticket to Dream’

An ode to sacrifice.

When we were making this film, I would think often of my Dad, an immigrant from government housing in Glasgow, Scotland. And of my mom, who came from Georgetown, Guyana.

Everyone who worked on this had a similar origin story – of parents who immigrated to Canada in search of a better life. And ALL we wanted to do collectively was to honour their journey, their perseverance.

Huge thanks to Air Canada for the longtime collaboration and trust. I’d follow you guys anywhere…
Scripts like this don’t come along every day. Tip of the hat to @sararadovanovich @funginthesun @jermcnama @creamoh @picassofp & everyone at FCB who poured infinite amounts of love into this.

I could easily turn this whole thing into a @christopher_lew appreciation post but I will just say that you set the new benchmark on this 🎥 🫡 🤝

Thankful for Si, Reets, @scouts.tv @moonlighting_commercials and all the names below who went on the journey w/ me.

Blessed to have longtime friends like @instagrahamchisholm @wadeodlum @dominikbochenski who put up with my shit.

Lastly, the performances in this are my favourite. Xolisa + Tara smashed every scene but a special shoutout to @nike.abiodun

First time on camera and she’s a pros pro. Can’t wait to watch you run the hurdles in LA28.

Air Canada | “Ticket to Dream” | Behind-the-Scenes

A story of cause and effect, two decades apart - merge and collide into one.

1️⃣ – @triciazaremba is always in the BG but she shapes everything we do. 🫡

2️⃣ - The reveal from our Para Olympic athlete to @nike.abiodun hitting the hurdles at full speed was the first take. that never happens, lol.
And the second 📝 is Nike’s performance. This was her first time “acting” on camera and she delivered it w/ so much nuance and authenticity. So proud of her, an absolute 💫

We only broke our rule twice but to help create fluidity when mirroring our two stories, @christopher_lew and I shot all scenes with Mom + Dad moving left to right, and all scenes with Nike moving right to left - until they met in Stade de Paris. We’re both not technique driven but we thought it would help shape the 🎞️’s momentum. And @instagrahamchisholm took this 🌊 to a different level.

5️⃣ – We were WAYYYYYY behind on this day and when you’re feeling the pressure to move, it’s easy to cut and run. Chris was adamant that we steal this frame and I’m so glad we did. It’s my favourite.

Long story short, an absolute dream job

GE | ‘DAY ONE’ | Behind-The-Scenes

Looking back, two scenes really stand out for me. The first was the opening scene down the tunnel. In most commercials, you have to manage the pressure of time, shots that communicate story in just a couple of seconds. But with this dropping on MLB’s opening day, we really wanted to Trojan Horse the feeling of anticipation + intrigue. What starts on cleats and is clearly one dimensional eventually reveals something bigger.

The second scene was the recreation of the 💡 turning on from 1935. You can’t feel it by watching, but they filmed the movie ’42 in this exact stadium so there’s something transformative about filming in a place loaded with nostalgia + history. Although it was just a simple dolly into scene, blocking + layering this scene with @malaimarejr_cinematography felt like we were making our own 🎥

And this may sound overly 🧀 but I guess you had to be there… the pitcher we cast, #5, was a former minor league pitcher named Joe Tart, who like many of us growing up - had dreams of the making it to the show. Not only did @cupofjoetart smash it, a couple days after we wrapped he sent me this, “I just wanted to drop you a quick note and let you know how grateful I am for the opportunity to make a dream come true! I’m sure you shared the same dream of making it to the big leagues but our paths just looked different. So in a roundabout way, me being on that mound and this airing for opening day… well that was my taste!”

To quote Brad Pitt, “It’s hard not to be romantic about baseball.”

Considering that baseball led me to film, this is what you’d call a dream job.

As a kid, I’d spend hundreds of hours nerding out on baseball 🎥 Seen ‘em all, it was my past time.

So hitting ⏩ 30+ years and getting the opportunity to recreate the 1st ever night baseball game from 1935 was pure 🪄 . The fact that it was GE’s last ever ad - no better canvas.

It’s hard not to get romantic about baseball when you’re filming this in Macon, in a full up, baseball cathedral.
ALL the Gratitude to everyone who threw down that night in Georgia.

@malaimarejr_cinematography - the blue dusk and moonlight before the lights smash on was 🫡
@thedeadringer ✍️ above + beyond.
Period work requires a ton of nuance + homework @marcellaelisa did not miss 💅
@artjail + @stevemotts DAMN. ‼️ Full time machine
@josephbicknell 🎨 w the nostalgia off the 📈

And lastly, thanks to GE, @igrody + Jason, everybody @ Giant Spoon + @supplydemandtv for letting me live out a childhood dream 🛌 🥹

GRIT TO GLORY | 🌹

A universal truth about life & sport is that input = output.

No journey is EVER a straight line especially @justinprose99 professional life.

Beyond archival footage, we really wanted to capture textures that were loaded with backstory, of trunk slams, of near misses, of heartbreak.

On Day 02 we went all in on these. Small beats, super nimble. Young JR was @_johndubois_ , the reining NCAA champion who absolutely killed it all day long.

Rule #1 - find yourself a body double who can carry driver 311 yards, snap clubs like Bo Jackson and trunk slam with the best of ‘em. 💪 🫣

FROM GRIT TO GLORY – Directors Cut

This is one of those crazy, fun moments where life goes full circle and hits super close to home.

As some of you know, my big bro @seanfoleyperformance coached @justinprose99 for a decade plus…. eventually winning a major, Olympic 🥇 and reaching world #1 together.

And as impressive as that is, that’s not JR’s true legacy. To me, his life story is the reason we watch sports.

At 17, he was the can’t miss kid, the prodigal son of Europe. Then heartbreak on 🔁 for years. The type of failure that would break most people.

This film honours JR’s grit + resilience. A true story into all the blood, sweat and years that makes greatness.

BIG, BIG, BIG thank you to the names below… to @patscola for his visual wizardry, to @instagrahamchisholm for the cut, to MS, TMA & S&D teams for all the support.

Round ✌🏼 for our friends at the Y.

Couple things I learned on this one: @christopher_lew is the real deal. A ton of setups, moves over our days but the craft was always mint. 🎥 🫡

Loved ALL the performances in this… the karate girl, the girls in the school & my guy @loveobra is a star. Every take, brought something new. 💫

NHL x “Look Up”

People debate it but IMO, winning the Stanley Cup IS the hardest trophy to win in all of sports.

This film celebrates that life’s pursuit. The mirror, the reflection in the final shot - is the reward for the lifelong struggle.

First one out of the gate w/ the new family @supplydemandtv - big thanks to Tim, Char, Nathan & Matt.

To highdive, the idea itself was genius in its simplicity. Loved mixing it up with you guys. Appreciate all the trust.
