It was a great honor to receive a call from @swatch earlier this year, inviting me to design a watch commemorating the 40th anniversary of their iconic world breakdance championship held at The Roxy in New York in 1984. My goal was to pay homage to the competition and to the beautiful poster created by Keith Haring. I aimed to capture the energy of Haring’s characters and translate it into my own character studies. I watched the legendary video of the event countless times to capture the classic breakers old school moves, adding a few contemporary ones in the process. I sampled the colors from the original poster for the dials and kept the watch face minimal, reflecting my Swiss design and minimalist heritage. The watch’s bracelets are more abstract, evoking the feeling one experiences when watching breakdancers, where their movements seem almost impossible to process fully.
The watch is called “Freeze Time” for an obvious reason. IYKYK.

Kimou Meyer (@groteskito) was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1974. Raised in a family of architects, Kimou found inspiration both at home and in the worlds of skateboarding, sports and hip hop. After graduating with highest honors from Belgium’s Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre in 1999, Kimou relocated to New York City to pursue joint ventures in art and creative direction.
That same year, he forged his GROTESK alter ego to practice mixed media artwork exploring themes of commercialization, social engineering and the humorous undertones of everyday life in New York. In 2010 he co-founded the sports-focused creative agency Doubleday & Cartwright (@doubledayandcartwright) and magazine Victory Journal, training his focus on major commercial projects including rebranding the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and developing the brand vision for David Beckham’s MLS franchise, Inter Miami CF. Kimou currently lives with his wife and two kids in Portland, Oregon where he works as a Sr. creative director for Nike and explores his next artistic chapters.
