Earlier this year, Joshua performed at Angelism’s “Sound Alchemists” event as a member of the group Hermetic Fever. This time, he returns performing in an experimental improvisation duo with his wife and fellow improviser, contrabassist, and artist Georgia E. Bell. Earlier this month my new work "No Voice is Hush'd", for bass clarinet and string trio, was premiered in Wonju, Korea. I'm grateful to Ensemble Wiro for working so hard on this difficult, but tender and subtle piece. Thanks as always to the Musicon collective and Ensemble Wiro for making it possible. 베이스 클라리넷과 현악 3중주를 위한 "No Voice is Hush'd"가 이번 토요일 원주에서 앙상블 위로의 초연으로 선보입니다! 이번 공연은 이 곡의 장편 버전 초연입니다. 이를 가능하게 해준 뮤지콘과 앙상블 위로에게 언제나처럼 감사드립니다.

Sebastian Claren (b.1965) - "Sex" for solo piano (1995/6), performance video from a few days ago here in Seoul! It was a challenge and honor to learn and perform every note of this rich and complex work by Sebastian Claren, who I first got to know a decade ago through our shared interest in Korean traditional music. Sebastian's work with Korean instruments is quite different from my own, but it (along with mine, I hope) is some of the most interesting, critically/historically engaged work a Western composer is doing interfacing with that tradition. However, this solo piano work from the '90s is inspired from another of our shared interests: a love of historical early 20th century "Romantic" pianism. Here, the title "Sex" is an allegory for the pianist's touch; specifically, the timbrally and expressively diverse touch of early 20th century piano gods like Hoffmann and Busoni. Twice as long as his much more extroverted, fiendishly difficult work "Alkan" composed around the same time, the difficulty of "Sex" is sonic, in its approach to tone and atmosphere, and psychological, as many sections contain extremely minute details of sound and rhythm, conceived as a kind of "Romantic" rhythmic flexibility, under a powerful microscope.

The diverse repertoire is united by the theme "Touch", exploring the various ways great composers have conceived of "touching", both emotionally and physically, over several centuries. This concert includes lesser-heard masterworks by Couperin, Debussy, CPE Bach, and friend and colleague Sebastian Claren, as well as Ravel's great Toccata from "Tombeau de Couperin". On Tuesday June 25th, I will perform a solo recital as part of the series "Wunderkammer", which I founded with Suin Park in 2023. These concerts are devoted to music relatively unknown or underplayed by modern pianists, spanning from the Renaissance to the contemporary avant-garde. This time, the theme of the program is "Touch", featuring works by Francois Couperin, CPE Bach, Debussy, Ravel, and living composer Sebastian Claren, with in-concert introductions to the repertoire by Ms. Park. 7:30pm, Sejong Performing Arts Center Chamber Hall in Seoul!
