Pictured: Nina demonstrates the process of rolling and aerating small batches of press sheets to keep them flexible and prevent adhesion – a necessity given the dangerously high ink levels in this bespoke printing process. This was done approximately 40-45 times for every sheet, and it was then repeated in the bindery before the sheets could be folded. Alexey Brodovitch - Ballet Detail comparisons Two different copies of the ORIGINAL EDITION In "Performing Print: Nina Holland and Joshua Chuang discuss Alexey Brodovitch’s Ballet," the co-editors of Little Steidl’s reissue present their startling new research. Surprise 1: Every copy of the original edition is different. No two copies match exactly, and many vary significantly. Surprise 2: Brodovitch chose a printing technique that could not be controlled. The variations between books were embraced by Brodovitch and were likely intended. Holland and Chuang remade Ballet using four copies of the original edition, each significantly different. Shown here are some of the printing variations they found among the original copies – both subtle and severe. How they approached remaking this "moving target" is the subject of their discussion. They walk you through the forensics and artistry of the new edition and shed light on the most radical aspect of Brodovitch’s masterpiece. The instinct to compare the reissue to the original is natural and essential to understanding the singularly radical nature of Ballet.
