New substack!! Ep #3 The arc of New Wave is grand. It starts as a look at a musical subculture within the Vietnamese diaspora but it transforms into an epic personal journey. In my convo with director @elizabeth_ai we discuss how the film went from a music doc to a personal one, finding the resolve to make the transition from being a producer to director, and how the film also turned into a book. Lots of great insight on the ins and outs of making a dream project a reality! Don’t ever let them tell you no, kids. My second substack is live!! And FREE FOR ALL TO READ.... I interviewed the team behind Zurawski v Texas about how to make a successful social issue doc in 2024. Even tho this one premiered at Telluride, there were no offers from major platforms to get the film out. But the team was also not going to sit on their hands. “We all know, and we've seen, there's been lots of articles written on this. There is no marketplace for anything that is deemed quote unquote political,” producer Blye Faust told me. Read all about how they made the film and have gotten it out themselves... SO proud of my former @nytopinion colleagues at this moment. As someone who worked for 11 years at @nytimes in both the news and opinion depts, I am personally rocked by the decisions of the LAT and WaPo to not endorse a candidate at the 11th hour. I know something how news institutions work. If they had announced six months ago they would not endorse a candidate that would be one thing. But to do it on the same day less than two weeks before an election is mind blowing and speaks to dark forces at play. The interests of the public are being trampled by those of billionaires who own these institutions. (Aside: Now is the time for publicly funded media!!) As our country hangs in the balance, I dread the outcome of this election and know those who will suffer the most will be those among us with the least resources and power.
