Someone asked me on the weekend if I was planning to do a lighting breakdown on any of the frames I shared from the last commercial I posted. I might - but this one was actually my favourite scene for reasons other than just lighting. The scheduling of this scene was particularly tricky due to the time restraints of having a child on set, and the fact that she was also scheduled for a scene earlier the same day which meant she had to be wrapped and off set by 4pm - so essentially we needed her for an early morning scene, and an evening scene on the same day without having access to her in the evening and while still having to shoot through the afternoon and finish up with the dusk shot of the car pulling into the driveway. I opted to shoot the scene of her colouring at the table first, and blocked out all natural light from the surrounding window - leaving enough space for me to jump inside the tent and shoot through the window. Lighting inside was a series of @arri skypanels - one to replicate the interior house lamps, and another in the kitchen giving the bluer night vibe, as well as a couple of @asteraofficial tubes to edge her out. Next up was the interior car scene - again we blocked all light coming into the car from above and covered the back windscreen with ND gel and lit the “mum” with a skypanel that was motivated to look like it could be the light from the house windows hitting her. This allowed us to continue shooting through the afternoon, wrap the child on time and be ready to shoot the car pulling into the driveway right as the sun was setting (even though it annoyingly clouded over right as we set up 🤦🏼

I don’t often share interview frames but I was super happy with this one for @normanaustralia with @catrionarowntree
Norman are a blinds and shutters company so the focus is always on light. For this interview I wanted it to feel like the perfect time of day to be sitting in Catrionas living room. To achieve this we used two @arri 4k’s with 1/2 CTS outside, one for the back wall and the other cutting across the couch and Catriona, just under her shoulder. For the key we used two @creamsource vortex’s - one as a broader key and the second closer to camera to wrap the key. We used a @prolycht 600 as a back edge/hair light, and an @aputure.lighting 600 into the ceiling to balance the ambient along with a couple of @asteraofficial tubes hidden away in the background to lift some shadows🙏🏼 shot on an @arriaustralia Mini Lf with Mamiya primes from @offshoot_ huge thanks to @dancoatesmedia@100dollarsofwine@northside_lights for helping me make this one look so good!
