‘Introducing’
Commercial for Traveler Whiskey featuring Chris Stapleton
@travellerwhiskey @chrisstapleton @buffalotracedistillery

Agency: @arascreativeco

This was an absolutely awesome collaboration with director @scottmatthewfredette . His understanding of the voice of @chrisstapleton and his intentions for this brand was a guiding light through this grade on some very, very pretty phantom footage. Shot by @micahsimms ! Huge thanks as always to @thesilentface @prestidigy for bringing us on and making the process so so smooth. Just like Traveller Whiskey?

In other news this really put me (@tam_again) onto Chris Stapleton as a musician. And some of what you said Scott about Chris and the brand and who it’s meant for… all makes so much more sense to me now.

Happy Friday! Time to sit down with a mellow drink.

Gracie Abrams @gracieabrams for @whowhatwear 2024 US Fall Issue
Editoral Video

A blast as usual to grade with @samrmiron for @samueljosephs @awiley_creative @whowhatwear @gracieabrams ! @mun.dia was asking me, how would you describe Sam’s style? And I think the one word that immediately comes to mind is: Intentional. “How can we make this feel more intentional?” is pretty much Sam’s first question for every color grade. There were some very, very interesting influences we used for this special grade and I couldn’t be happier with it. Huge thanks to @samueljosephs and team for bringing us on and having an amazing vision and shoot in the first place.

Extra big ups to @collinhughart for crushing it in the edit and being an awesome collaborator. Great post teams make the world a better place

The Motherload (3/3)
Narrative Feature

When Van and Alex first came to us, their references for color were from the film’s third act: when Kim and Jessca finally land in Vietnam at Jessca’s behest. In many respects the film was colored backwards from this anchor point. Acts 1 and 2 both narratively and visually contrasting with the stunningly familiar sights and sounds of Vietnam in the flesh.

I ( @tam_again ) do think that most diasporic asians can relate: that in many ways the relationship with ones parents’ at its best feels almost rhythmic; a slow waltz of give and take. An oscillation of strength and weakness. It’s in these rhythms that we begin to see each other, and in some ways ourselves, for who we really are.

To me, The Motherload is about a capitulation of something that is inherently broken. Like a window pane through which we were told to view our own lives; in the moments when it finally shatters there is simply a sound of the world outside. Van and Sandy’s wonderful performances mold the many concepts and languages of The Motherload into a truly beautiful film.

The Motherload (2/3)
Narrative Feature

Two inventive storylines complicate The Motherload to levels of absurdity.

The television show Jessca works on is a film criticism program reminiscent of Siskel and Ebert- within which Van Tran Nguyen and Sandy Tran reenact potent scenes from films, and also portray the two intellectual critics bickering over them.

The second is a catastrophic (nightmare blunt rotation) pitch meeting between Vy Bui, an aspiring Vietnamese screenwriter, and the puppet likenesses of several “legendary” American filmmakers. All within their lair-like office perched in the D of the Hollywood Sign overlooking Los Angeles. The result is a whole new nightmarishly redundant and overstylized TV pilot called “The Delta.”

Both of these programs glide in and out beneath the narrative backbone of Jessca and Kim’s personal story. And reflect the stunning disconnect between the Vietnamese diaspora and the world’s understanding of their presence.

I ( @tam_again ) actually had an infamous argument once with two friends about Apocalypse Now in a freshman dorm, in which I was surprised that my two non-vietnamese buddies thought it was a powerful depiction of the Vietnam War itself. I was adamant that it was completely allegorical and “not about the Vietnam war. It’s a verbatim adaptation of Hearts of Darkness”. Those latent feelings had not been put into words until working on this film with its penetrating and memorable commentary.

“In my opinion, they intended to make a satire about militarism and extreme masculinity- but ended up merely depicting them” - Sang

The Motherload (1/3)
Narrative Feature

The Motherload is monumental labor of love between directorial dream couple @dr.vannypoopants and @alexderwick! It’s hard to put into words what this film means to me( @tam_again ) - aside from the fact that as a student of cinema and a second gen Vietnamese-American, it’s cathartic. It is both deeply lighthearted, and incisive to a diamond tip. There are moments when dark places within you suddenly have headlights shown on them- that’s what The Motherload does to me, and I’m proud to have helped bring it to life.

The first post of this 3 part series centers around Jessca and Kim’s fairytale relationship in America. Mom and Daughter roughing it in the back of a nail salon, hustling their way through life.

I’ve never put it into words before, but there’s a dreaminess to that muddy hustle that I think every Vietnamese American knows, no matter how high or low they are on the “totem pole” so to speak. Look-wise, Van and Alex came to us with references of filmic nostalgia and old warmth. It was a pleasure to bring all of the different types of footage together into this curious and wistful journey.
- @tam_again, colorist

Stay tuned for festival news!

“Jessca embarks on a quest to find a home that once belonged to her mother’s family during pre-war Vietnam. Kim (Jessca’s mother), happy in her new but precarious position in America, fights to stay stateside. With a cast consisting only of two Vietnamese-American women re-enacting and satirizing scenes from celebrated Vietnam War films while depicting a diasporic reality, this movie takes a closer look at what has been lost in war, what we find in the rubble, and how to hold on to what remains.”

Dad Bod
Short Film

Premiered at @lesfilmfestival and featured on @filmshortage !

Another insanely fun film with @baltarescu @gregharriott and the @bowsxarrows squad! The question of, “what type of person do I want to be” at some point for many becomes “what kind of parent do I want to be?” And I (@Tam_again) took advantage of pretty much every call with @baltarescu asking him the most personal questions possible about fatherhood. Do you feel different? Is it scary? Is it hard as hell? Is it amazing?
(Yes to all of that it seems!)

As always with the @bowsxarrows team, this film was created with a clever poignance, as well as genuine love and humor, which is always such a pleasure to be a part of.

“When an anxious new father struggling to connect with his infant daughter stays home to take care of her by himself for the first time, things start to unravel in an unexpected way.”

Night Of The Tilberi
Short Film

Throwback post for a stunning film! Such an honor to work with @lisasaeboe @katejonesjoyce & @jakemoore on Night of the Tilberi. We’re always surprised when we look back and realize how gorgeous it really was. The most mindbending projects always have the warmest folks behind them!

“Inspired by the occult lore surrounding the fishing village’s founder, an arcane prophetess named Þórdís, the film is a tale of the local legend of the Tilberi, an enchanted milk-stealing worm created by witches. “Night of the Tilberi” is the absurdist visual retelling of a local folktale that subdues themes of the sacrilegious in an uncanny artifact.”

The original score was composed by Brooklyn-based producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Rare DM, using all analog synths. It was mixed in Montreal by Margo Wildman.

“They are not invisible. They are seen.”

A huge pleasure to work on this film with frequent collaborator @adambaronbloch , and to be touched with the warmth and trust of @or_schraiber and the ultra talented @jamesnrana

@jamesnrana and @or_schraiber made this mostly silent film in the vein of Charlie Chaplin and Jacques Tatis- a creative decision which so powerfully mirrors the experience of the diasporic humans it represents. And of all the references we’ve received for color- Aki Kaurismaki’s Leningrad Cowboys has to be the biggest head turner out there. Congrats to this talented team! We cannot wait to share this with some folks we love dearly.
