First Sunday
Growing up in a Nigerian church, there was always something special about the first Sunday of a month aka ‘Thanksgiving Sunday’. It’s typically marked by extravagant traditional clothing and headpieces. The outfit choices are intentional, they’re symbolic as they’re considered to be part of a praise offering to God.
Recently I’ve been thinking about adornment as an act of praise, worship, offering, sacrifice and I wanted to create a photo series that speaks into this with hair as the focus.

As part of our SALON installation, @eireannandi are hosting a workshop taking place on the 31st of August from 12-2:30 pm in the @luangalleryathlone
Participants are invited to a viewing of Chez Jolie Coiffure by Rosine Mbakam. The documentary takes place in Jolie Coiffure, a hair salon in the Matonge district of Brussels run by Cameroonian hairdresser Sabine. Despite having been in Belgium for almost a decade, Sabine is still awaiting a decision on her asylum application.
The second slide is an intimate portrait that captures Sabine’s daily life at the salon, perfecting her craft whilst whiling away time talking and laughing with an eclectic cast of patrons and visitors, many of whom also harbour the same fears about deportation. After viewing the film, we will respond to the film through discussion and collage making with myself!
Bookings are essential for attendance and can be made by contacting Luan Gallery directly at 090 6442154 or info@luangallery.ie

It’s even prettier in person! You can check it out at @luangalleryathlone as part of the SALON installation with @eireannandi
It’s just one of our posters from our installation. Our exhibition as a whole focuses on themes of self finishing and community making. We look at hair and salon spaces are often a means of cultural expression and visual agency and how that is a restorative practice for migrants.

We are pleased to present SALON, an installation produced by hairstylist @adesewa_ as part of the @museumofeveryone Tides of Momental Gesture exhibition. Open from the 9th of July to the 8th of September, this installation focuses on self-fashioning, and allows viewers to explore the meanings of cultural expression and visual agency as a restorative practice for migrants. Visitors are invited to view and listen to rich narratives that highlight how black communities have negotiated their identities.
This installation forms the second iteration of Éireann and I’s open table workshop series which invites guest artists to join them in exploring the dynamics between migrants/natives and guests/artists.
Join us for the official launch on the 12th of July at 6pm at the @luangalleryathlone
