This spring, KOZABURO traveled to the southwest of Japan, specifically to Tokushima in Shikoku, to reunite with the Watanabes, who still practice TENNEN AKU HAKKO DATE. This traditional method uses only natural materials and fermentation to create SUKUMO, a dye made from fermented indigo leaves. The Watanabes handle the entire process, from preparing the soil for the indigo plants (TADEAI, or Persicaria tinctoria) to produce SUKUMO, which is a year-long journey requiring extensive experience and knowledge.
The TENNEN AKU HAKKO DATE method was largely replaced by chemical indigo from the West during the industrial revolution. However, SUKUMO offers a wide range of unique colors and benefits, such as antiviral properties and durable fabric.
This season Kozaburo introduces our signature and new styles utilizing the Watanabe dying method to apply on our Hex-Sashiko and cycora® regenerated fabric. Hex-Sashiko is a newly developed original weave fabric made of cotton. This new fabric has a unique hexagonal pattern weave, providing extensive durability and attention to the fabric construction.
KOZABURO and the Watanabes first met in New York back in 2015. The Watanabes are reviving this traditional and sustainable method, and we resonate with their path of continually questioning the traditional indigo practices to preserve and evolve this knowledge for our time and our current environment.

Another destination of our research on botanical dye in Japan this season was Amami Oshima. It is an island in Kagoshima prefecture where one can find the natural dyeing method Doro-Zome (Mud-Dyeing). This method involves dyeing with tannic acid from the pigment of Sharinbai (Rhaphiolepis umbellate), a plant, and soaking it in native iron-rich mud to induce a particular reaction that creates the benefits of antibacterial properties and strengthening fibers and weaves. In addition, they give a unique fade with wear time.
One of the collaborators of this development and the navigator of the trip to the island was Tadaaki Hajime-san. We initially met in New York last winter, and I immediately felt familiar. He was kindly open to the development and our visit. Thanks to Hajime-san.

Inspired by American folkcraft and velvet painting with the Japanese Sukajan jacket style, our version of the Souvenir Jacket bridges the gap between east and west. The embroidery art reflects the utopian world of Kozaburo, and iconic places the brand has traveled through.

Last weekend at @complexcon, Phantom Ranch by Kozaburo (@hok_prm_kzbr) teamed up with @cactusjack to launch a special collaboration of our signature stapled hats. For this project, the vintage hats were handpicked by the Cactus Jack team and stapled by the House of Kozaburo.
Phantom Ranch is sub-project by Kozaburo, all about giving used items a second life—with rough and precise handcrafts such as staples we aim to create a new attitude by pouring the raw spirit of the moment.
The stapled hats take inspiration from kintsugi, the Japanese craft of mending broken pottery with staples or gold. Deeply rooted in Zen Buddhist philosophy, this art form embodies the essence of wabi-sabi that finds beauty in imperfection, simplicity, and the transient nature of life.
The collaboration hats will be dropping soon on @hok_prm_kzbr Instagram—follow us to stay updated on their release and availability.

Last month, our Genesis House x CFDA Grant Recipients embarked on a distinctly Korean cultural immersion trip to Seoul. The Recipients explored the vibrant metropolis while experiencing the best of Korean culinary and cultural heritage. We’re excited to follow what they bring home with them from this creatively expansive experience and how it inspires their collections in the February exhibition.
