Thank you to everyone who joined us for Entering Aufhebung at :iidrr Gallery. This four-day exhibition presented the latest sculptural explorations by Wenjue Lu and Chufeng Fang @w.luuuu @cannedjunk , the artists behind Studio Wenjüe Lu, alongside installation work by Teresa Wang @rupurtsons . The delicate fiber-based sculptures by Lu and Fang, rendered in natural tones, unfold as meditations on stillness and fragility, offering a counterpoint to the accelerating rhythms of contemporary life. The artists’ nuanced approach, informed by their backgrounds in fashion and cultural studies, invites a reassessment of human centrality, proposing instead an interconnected, shared reality. Teresa Wang’s installations enter into this dialogue with a stark, industrious aesthetic, prompting reflection on identity, ego, and the intersection of Hegelian and Daoist thought. Their works, often featuring natural-colored fibers, subtly explore themes of stillness, fragility, anxiety, and slowness within an ever-accelerating world. Drawing from their diverse educational backgrounds in fashion, media and cultural studies, the duo challenges the ego-driven momentum of contemporary life, reflecting their shared vision of an alternative world, where human centrality dissolves. This exhibition showcases the initiation of their latest series of soft sculptures that, while serving as physical invitations to philosophical inquiry, instigate a dialogue between ego, multiple selves, Hegelian dialectics, and Daoism. Joining in the dialogue in this show is artist Teresa Wang and her industriously nihilistic installation works, demonstrating one possible conversation out of infinite others.

Gymnastics, 2023 Soft Sculpture by Wenjue Lu & Chufeng Fang . Imagine there is a city, a playground alongside many other playgrounds, merry-go-rounds, seesaws, swings, and slides…  the quintessential elements found in a modern children’s playground, and then there’s Gymnastics: a softened, dysfunctional set of fixtures including the bar, still ring, rope wall, and ladder — a fugitive from the playground. Under a Taoist worldview, Wenjue Lu & Chufeng Fang created the soft sculpture piece around the concept of “play” and “wu-wei”(無為) to explore the line between restricted and unrestricted play under urbanization. As cities expanded and populations swelled in the 20th century amid rapid industrialization and modernization, the growing need for recreational spaces for children propagated the introduction of urban playgrounds. — No longer relegated to the streets, play became confined to designated areas with standardized equipment and controlled environments — Artificial landscapes imposing boundaries and regulations on the act of play. The sculpture highlights how “playground staples” dictate not only what one plays but also how, with whom, and the perceived outcomes of play.  By depicting the visual recreation of playground set undergoing transformation, eschewing straight lines and standardized shapes in favor of organic, flowing contour, the piece invites the audience to liberate the idea of “play” from the confines of predetermined structures with the help of Taoist concept of Wu-Wei(無為) — often translated as “effortless action” or “non-action,” which encourage the engagement in spontaneous and unrestrained exploration, allowing our actions to arise naturally from the present moment without constraints or preconceived notions.  . A synesthetic metaphor bottling in wind adrift and leaves afloat; An olfactory poetry piece, one that posits itself at the nebulous liminal - - between the cultivated and the wild, the tethered and the unyielding, the astounded and the unbothered, the feigning and the living, and lastly, the artificial and the natural.  With all-natural, steam-distilled cannabis at the forefront and patchouli deep inside its heart, 𝑾𝒊𝒊𝒅 is inspired by the double etymological meanings of the noun “Weed”: Not just as the slang for the infamous smokable psycho-active cannabis plant signifying the quite literal usage of the plant itself into the aroma profile; but also - “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴” - symbolizing a return to nature, going against the inorganic-city and arbitrariness of the sharp distinction between the “cultivated” and the “wild”. .
