did you know this photo with a man I won't tag or name got me my first big break as a fledgling writer??
the series premiere of vanderpump rules crashed into my life during the final hours of high school, in 2013. it was my refuge that summer, and then in college, late night, after class and a 40 hour work week to pay the bills in the most expensive city in america. (goodbye forever san francisco!) when the doors shut on my graduation ceremony, I met
@_matthewlawson at a shitty office job we hated, and together started
@eatingforfree in a shed in his backyard. listeners sprouted up, and then their money, and we pooled our initial earnings to take a trip to LA, to record an episode in the various bar locations of our favorite show, VPR.
while on that bar crawl, I sent an incredibly drunk pitch email to the EIC at the website I was guest-writing a column for that spring. (hi,
@jawnita !) the pitch never went anywhere, but it was one of many funny things I said and did to my poor editors in my still brief time at the website, and when they hired me that fall for a staff position, they cited it as one of the ideas I should bring up in the next week's pitch meeting.
oh, and on that bar crawl, the man you see above insisted repeatedly that he was a famous person we should take a photo with. he tried to put his arms around me and I put matt between us, not because of fear or anything like that. mostly, I didn't want to be a plot point on the TV show. six years later, I still look back at it and laugh. that show's officially over now, and the cast is scattered to the wind. but hey, at least we'll always have the memories โค๏ธ
