The first single from my upcoming EP, Past Life / Lifeline, is out today on @bettercompanyrecords 🙌 The EP features some of my favorite and most frequent collaborators: @laviniameijer @nadiasirota @sandbox_percussion and @lisel.jpeg This track is the first movement of Past Life, a piece I wrote for Lavinia and Nadia and that they toured across the Netherlands and US last year. After the tour we recorded it at @bettercompanystudios with @avtate and it was mixed by @tmcdiarmid It was a real pleasure to watch these two who are operating at such a high musical level navigate this piece and make it their own. Listen at the 🔗 in bio The album centers on two principal pieces: “Past Life,” for harp and viola, and “Lifeline,” for percussion quartet. Mirroring each other in themes and construction, the two works are a reflection on the spaces we inhabit, in both a literal and a musical sense, and how memory can have an impact on our perception of those spaces over time. I am so excited to play @donnachadennehy’s TESSELLATUM as part of the @laphil’s Noon to Midnight: Field Recordings, a 12-hour new music festival of live performances and art installations activating every corner of Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from noon to midnight! ☀️🎶🌙 TESSELLATUM is a phenomenal 38-minute work for viola and strings that toggles between just intonation and equal temperament, creating a “a monumental mosaic of shifting perspectives.” Performed alongside an animated film by @stevenstmertens, TESSELLATUM will be played by myself with the @laphil led by Molly Turner (@mollyxiuturner). Curated by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid, Noon to Midnight explores the intersection of art, technology, and nature through the lens of field recordings. Featuring over 35 visionary composers, 15 ensembles and hundreds of musicians, this is an invitation to experience how sound changes us by participating in deeper forms of listening. The festival will feature multiple world premieres including the unveiling of artist Doug Aitken’s groundbreaking ‘Lightscape’ performed by the LA Phil New Music Group and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Tom and Robbin had the most touching things to say about the record. “…I listen to this, and think, this could go on for an hour and it wouldn’t stop being as transfixing as it is.” “…that husky warmth…radiant, and serene, and rapturous all at once.” They also gave a beautiful memorial acknowledgment of @sarahgibsoncomp’s career, impact, and remarkable musicianship here. The first acoustic sound on ☀️Big Majestic☀️ is an ascending viola line realized by the endlessly gifted Nadia Sirota. Nadia’s playing is featured throughout the album continually bringing a warmth and a depth to the sound world, creating a sonic embrace. Her brilliance extends far beyond her playing. She’s a curator, a thought leader, a member of @ymusicnyc, a conductor, co-founder of Eclipse Projects and a Peabody Award winning producer and broadcaster. Nadia co-produced Big Majestic, and for the past 5 years, she has been fearlessly in the weeds with me helping to define the creative center of this project. Thank you Nadia!
