No one likes showreels. What are they for? Isn’t sliding through an album of stills more than enough? I can not answer these questions. But I can show you my showreel. That’s actually quite funny, because Instagram makes me post this as a REEL. So I’m showing your this REEL. Is that what they are for? Did Instagram invent them to make you use their Reels feature? If you watch my reel till the end, will you be caught by the algorithm and continue watching hundreds of reels for the next two hours? How many of those will be cool cinematography showreels? I guess that depends on your personal preferences, and surely I hope you don’t watch Cinematography showreels in your free time. If it’s your job to do so, I guess it’s fine. You get paid to watch Instagram reels. We are going on circles now. Please enjoy this reel, and hire me, so I can annoy you with a new showreel with new content soon.

Thanks to all the people that made me shoot the things in this reel @vincentsylvain @marleen.valien @arne_hain @therealcarlycoco @almabuddecke @levekuhl @alex.anderkohn @almas.stories @maximilianmundt @annalenaschwing @michamuhl_ @maxrauerdp

Yes, it is annoying when camerapeople post things other than film stills or camera rigs, I agree. But due to popular demand, I present you a little follow up to my previous nostalgia post. I know, this is not relevant to anyone, that doesn’t know any of these people. So those people can still profit from this post, I added a little travel guide to Ludwigsburg, if you ever happen to end up there.

Ludwigsburg is a city with 90.000 inhabitants in the state of Baden Württemberg. It is home to a mindboggling 3 baroque castles and to about 500 film students. It also has five cinemas - even six, if you count the drive-in theatre on the edge of town.

Once you stop eating the subventized student-food options and start ignoring prices, you will find out that it’s also a culinarily great place. I enthusiastically recommend you having lunch at Seybolds Kleine Auster Right in the marketplace. Order two oysters, an Edelfischpasta and a small glass of Riesling. If you are not into fish, you’ll go to Feinkost Gregorio, which we lovingly call “Stehitaliener”.

Afterwards you are going to grab a coffee at Romero Coffee Roaster, run by Jairo, who gets his beans straight from his family farm in South America. If you tell him, you are a Filmakademie student, and you give a believable performance, he might even give you a discount.

For dinner, you should really check out Post Cantz, for the best Swabian food or “El Olivo” right next door, for “a Swabian who has been to Spain once” food. Both are exquisitely good.

I would describe myself as not much of a sentimental person, and if I would start to talk about my six years of Ludwigsburg, I’d get endangered of ruining that image of myself. That’s why I keep this caption short for once. When I got accepted at @filmakademie_bw , I panicked that I now have to move from the northern metropole of Hamburg, to a small southern town (which is something one from Hamburg grows up to despise). I thought I would travel back home every weekend. Never would I have guessed that some of the best years of my life (so far) were ahead of me.

But it’s time to go, even I got that now. It got me, like it got everyone else: Hello, Berlin.

Here is another one of those films that take incredibly long to shoot. My fourth stop-motion work is @ferdinand.ehrhardt DETLEV. Close to the end of @filmakademie, this was kind of a full circle project, as I did my very first project at film school as a directing Duo with Ferdi about six years ago. This time though he was a lonesome director. I, on the other hand, had once more to pleasure to work in a Duo: This time with the marvelous @leo_cha. Another 10 months of fun for a 10 minute film. Please never stop stop motion. It’s the best.

And if you are really attentive, you’ll notice my first step into the world of voice acting.

People like old school stuff and now that everyone is sick and tired of shouting into the analogue tonezzzzz echochamber, you have to find a new outdated thing to get excited about. Gen Z has done that and 2000s digicams are all over TikTok, I heard. @sandrorados and I, two hardcore millennials, tried to jump onto that trend to shoot our newest music video for this millennial punk band on a Olympus Camedia Digicam from 2002. Unfortunately we broke that one after two shots and continued on a 2008 Canon cybershot, which was selflessly sponsored by our most Gen-Zy millennial friend @lisa.purtscher . Thanks for keeping us hip, Lisa. Could you post this to TikTok for us?

„an overworked and underpaid office worker is fighting her way through the endless hallways of a surreal office building - just a shimmering goal in the distance to keep her going. a sign of hope? The promise of absolution? Or just a short break from this endless repeat of misery?“

Inspired by the tired editors of @filmakademie_bw tumbling down the hallways between their editing sweets with the sweet glory of the coffee vending machine waiting right in front of NLE-7, we made THE INFINITE BREAKROOM.
But how can we make this nightmarish reality of working a desk job visible? Luckily right around that time Virtual Production was the newest craze in filmmaking - so we wanted to try that as well!

With the amazingly talented team of VFX artists, we created a company-hell, as well as a the damp and eerie office hallway as a tribute to @kanepixels and the backroom urban legend all for virtual production.

Now this film is premiering at @grimmfest on Sunday and I couldn’t be more happy!

I once read a blogpost about the difficulty scientist have, with marking nuclear waste sites for the next 10.000 years. In the case that our civilization ceases exciting, and humanity (or whatever follows) forgets, where we put all our radioactive waste, we would still need to warn those future beings. Warn them, that the very place they enter will eventually kill them, without them even knowing. Scientists developed four easy steps, that are needed to convey that information to someone, that might not speak a language, that we know of today.

Step 1: there is something here, that was man-made. Or woman-made I guess. Looking at you Marie Curie.
Step 2: Something man-made is here, and it is dangerous.
Step 3: basic information, like the lovely W-questions. What When Where Who Why and the interloper HOW
Step 4 then goes into specific details about what radioactive radiation is. And let’s be honest that’s even too complicated for me, even though I do speak contemporary languages.

Some smart people also thought about building structures, that scare you away from this radioactive areas. The main problem is, that a structure that is designed to look dangerous and scare you away, will definitely look absolutely cool. Look at the last two slides for some of those designs.

In our film „MENACING EARTHWORKS“, which is named after one of these concepts, our protagonist walks through a highly radioactive desert WITHOUT any markings at all. He feels the heat of the radiation all around him, but he can just go forward, walking this deadly runway that is a fashion film. @etudes

I hope you learned something today.

Once upon a time, it must be nearly two years ago, @vincentsylvain and @michaelhessenbruch and a few other amazing people traveled to the Spanish Island of Fuerte Ventura. The border patrol didn’t know much, about importing filmquipment, but we did and we brought our ATA Carnet. We explained to that border patrol officer how to let us onto his island to shoot in the dunes right next to the sea.

It was windy and sandy, but @benjamin.heckwolf took good care of our equipment, @sarahheidelbergerguzman let us bury her, even though she just wanted to dress @rayenerezouani nicely, and @vincentltm was also there to hold a greenscreen and crack some jokes.

Now after years of editing, vfx versions and CRT glitch passes, we can present you our fashion film for @etudes

Content warning for self harm in the second slide, I guess.
Content recommendation for everyone that enjoys the latter.

„How to Fly“ was tough to shoot, because even if they live high up in the mountains, not even Swiss people are able to fly. Luckily we adapted the script to mostly happen on solid ground. So to shoot it, we put up two long Truss Sliders and two cameras with anamorphic zooms of the long range to shoot our scenes that contained a lot of improvisation. Our method to shoot the very unhinged acting was probably inspired by Lars von Trier‘s later films, as well as the many group scenes of Succession. Out poor line producer @randomguysmemory had to handle the somewhat unspecific shortlists, that mostly contained the position of the slider, rather than the content of the shot itself. We still got through the shoot, thanks to our amazing Swiss crew, but also our few German and Polish crew members, that went so far to practice method-crewing were you sleep right in the middle of the cult-hideout set, until you believe you are part of a cult yourself.

We had our world premiere with “How To Fly” in Switzerland yesterday. @kurzfilmtagewin were excited to show our film as part of their competition. Unfortunately I can’t come up with any funny captions now, because I am still jetlagged from the travels to Switzerland.

Almost exactly a year ago, we shot a short film called “How To Fly” in Switzerland. You might think, this film teaches you flying, maybe becoming a drone operator or such. But no! This is not an educational film, it is an entertaining one. It’s a film about poor Martha, a nice lady fighting depression. Unfortunately she is one of these people, that find their solutions in crude telegram groups. And so Martha ends up in a cult-like gathering, that instead of healing her depression, wants to teach her how to fly.

You might have noticed that bright shining light in the first picture. This is a tribute to @shining_film who were kind enough to produce this film with us.
