A few of my favorite moments from @allure Best of Beauty Live II on the grid for posterity 💄 This month I got to share a stage not only with my brilliant colleagues but also with the woman, the myth, the legend: @therealpatmcgrath ✨ Met so many passionate beauty lovers, from age 7 to 77 (“I want to come until I’m 80”). Can’t wait to do it again in 50ish weeks (and, this time, perhaps more fully consider the effect of stage lights when selecting a blouse? or… maybe not! 🖤) #allurebestofbeautylive

This enchanting evening with @esteelauder followed a day of fascinating conversation at the Stanford Center on Longevity. I learned many things but some of the most interesting and impactful were simply what longevity researchers—neurologists and internists and dermatologists and more—are doing to improve their own healthspans (a term most seem to prefer to “lifespan”). A few things came up again and again—and I’ve been doing my best to act on them since I returned to real life: 

*eat a plant-dominated diet
*socialize (ideally with people who love you and challenge you)
*BREATHE (deeply)
*sleep not just enough but WELL (get black-out shades and don’t let your phone anywhere near your bedroom)
*do regular strength-training (your brain will benefit as much as your biceps)
*walk (outside and if you can at sunset, the red light is great for your mood and skin)
*drink champagne (this was not stated explicitly but champagne was served so…)

Our 2023 Best of Beauty cover is what happens when you align #BillieEilish, a really incredible team, and maybe the stars 💫 These images are breathtaking (no really I actually gasped as dispatches came through from the set) and @arabellesicardi profile is a beautiful look at a young woman who’s doing a pretty great job at figuring out what she’s made for. And she’s prepared to stand her ground: “I have settled many times with things and people and life. I’ve settled for less than I deserved, and I’m not going to do that anymore.”

It was a complete honor to be  part of #UNGA last week and moderate a panel at the SDG Media Zone about how the fashion and beauty industries can reject greenwashing and rewrite narratives around aspiration and consumption. Make no mistake: These are industries that have done our planet few favors – and the fashion industry is not on track to meet its sustainability targets. But they’re also industries that are pretty damn brilliant at telling beautiful, compelling stories that inspire and influence. 

Thank you to storyteller and activist @aditimayer, Aileen Lerch of @allbirds, the UN Environmental Program’s Isabella Marras, and virtual guest @ambervalletta for joining this conversation. If you are in any way a part of the marketing or media machines that surround the fashion and beauty industries, I highly recommend getting familiar with UNEP’s Sustainable Fashion Communication Playbook, as well as @allure’s own pledge on our sustainability reporting (aka Why We Will Never Parrot Marketingspeak on “Recylable” or “Refillable” or “Zero-Waste” Beauty.)

As @minipetro of @goodenergystory said to me not long ago in a conversation about the climate crisis: If scary statistics were going to save us, we would’ve fixed this shit long ago. Statistics, no matter how bleak, don’t spark transformation. Stories do.

Happy Best of Beauty Day to all who celebrate! As I approach 10 years at @allure (not counting a little mid-aughts run), I marvel at the strength and longevity of this annual phenomenon (really the best word for it). Beauty awards may be multiplying like 🐰🐰🐰 today but when @lindawellsny decided to actually say “these are the best beauty products right now” back in 1996 it was a wild concept. (But… you can’t pick favorites! What will the advertisers say!) 

Best of Beauty now lives and breathes across so many platforms, most of which didn’t exist 27 years ago. (And, for the first time ever, there’s a consumer event coming next month!) It’s lifted up so many amazing new brands, connected so many founders to us and each other, and it’s helped so many shoppers make smart decisions about what’s going to really and truly work for them… which is the ultimate goal. 

And it’s produced by just the BEST team: Beauty editors who bring many decades of experience to the process of testing across what has become a massive landscape of beauty products. And creatives and producers who mastermind visual and digital experiences that give the winners the star treatment they deserve. 💫 #allurebestofbeauty
