I first saw Butoh depicted in incredible books by Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama and William Klein. I was instantly hooked. But no one seems to shoot it in colour, so I thought I’d give it a go. ‘Butoh, a Japanese dance-theatre art form characterised by slow and expressive dance moves, was born of the creative and existential void left by World War II. Diving into the depths of the individual, the practice unearths buried emotions and translates them into movement. It honours the full range of the human experience, including absurdity, beauty, and suffering. ;’ ⁠ For @atmos Volume 10: Afterlife. Some images of a project I’ve been working on with artist @richardmalone and @gracemargetsonstudio in Wexford, Ireland. Grace introduced me to Richard’s work while we were working together, and it turns out Richard grew up on the same road where my grandmother was born. Before I met Richard, I went to the local library to learn about my family history, and I discovered that my great-uncle died on the old Wexford Bridge while cycling home from the pub. The bridge has since been changed, and parts of it are now overgrown in the fields behind Richard’s house.
